This first Greek edition of Jules Verne's From the Earth to the Moon appeared in 1871 only a few years after the novel's original French publication in 1865 marking an early introduction of Verne's pioneering scientific fiction to Greek readers. The work with its imaginative account of a projectile launched toward the Moon by a giant cannon combines adventure with detailed discussions of astronomy engineering and physics-qualities that helped establish Verne as a major figure in the emerging genre of science fiction. Its early translation into Greek is particularly significant because it demonstrates how quickly Verne's vision crossed linguistic and national boundaries in nineteenth-century Europe at a time when advances in science and technology were capturing the public imagination. 1416843.
