Galland's Les mille et une nuits originally issued in twelve volumes between 1704 and 1717 was the first European translation of the collection and was enormously influential in establishing the Arabian Nights in European literature. Antoine Galland 1646-1715 was a French orientalist antiquary and translator. His version of the Arabian Nights profoundly shaped European perceptions of Middle Eastern storytelling The collection is framed around Scheherazade or the Sultaness of the Indies who prolongs her life by telling the Sultan a succession of interconnected tales each night leaving her story unfinished.
