1783rif. 1029H2London: T. Longman 1783 . Leather. Good. 7" by 4.5". None. A complete four-volume English edition of the "Arabian Nights" preserving the enormously influential 18th century English version derived from Antoine Galland's French translation. Uniformly bound in full contemporary calf. The front board of volume I is fully detached but present. A complete four-volume edition of the Arabian Nights translated into French from the Arabic manuscripts by Antoine Galland and subsequently rendered into English from the last Paris edition. The anonymous English version first published in 1706 remained the dominant English text throughout much of the 18th century. ESTC No.: N29714. Galland's Les mille et une nuits originally issued in twelve volumes between 1704 and 1717 was the first European translation of the collection and was enormously influential in establishing the Arabian Nights in European literature. Antoine Galland 1646-1715 was a French orientalist antiquary and translator. His version of the Arabian Nights profoundly shaped European perceptions of Middle Eastern storytelling The collection is framed around Scheherazade or the Sultaness of the Indies who prolongs her life by telling the Sultan a succession of interconnected tales each night leaving her story unfinished. The enduring popularity of the tales in this collection helped establish the Arabian Nights as one of the most influential works of translated literature in 18th century Europe. Uniformly bound in full contemporary calf. Externally a little worn. Front board of vol I fully detached but present. Joints cracked boards tender but generally holding with the exception of vol I. Rear board of vol I loose holding to cords. Contemporary ink ownership inscriptions to front paste downs. Hinges strained but generally firm. Slight discolouration from binder's glue to endpapers.
