The Jews of the former Soviet Union have always been the subject of intense controversy. In the past 25 years, especially, they have been the source of considerable speculation. [ ]The issues swirling around the Jews in the republics now known as the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) have sparked debate because of the status of these Jews has deep policy implications for Russia, Israel, the United States, and other countries. [ ] This volume is the first based on an on-site survey of Jews in the CIS. In addition to providing data on the Jews of Moscow, Kiev, and Minsk who collectively account for over a quarter of all Jews residing in the three Slavic republics of the CIS the author places the survey results in their social and historical contexts. He explains why ethnic distinctiveness persisted and even became accentuated in the Soviet era and also describes the position of Jews in Soviet and post-Soviet society and some of the dilemmas they face. 2004Publishers cloth. 8vo. Ix, 300 pages. 23 cm. Illustrated. First edition. Signed by author. "Yiddish and the Creation of Soviet Jewish Culture gives voice to the activists empowered by the state to create a Soviet Jewish national culture. These activists were striving for a national revolution to create a new culture for Jews to identify as Jews on new, secular, Soviet terms. This book explores the ways in which Jews were part of, not apart from, both the Soviet system and Jewish history. Soviet Jewish culture worked within contemporary Jewish national and cultural trends and simultaneously participated in the larger project of propagating the Soviet state and ideology. Soviet Jewish activists were not nationalists or Soviets, but both at once. David Shneer addresses some of the painful truths about the Jews' own implication and imbrication in the Soviet system and inserts their role in twentieth-century Jewish culture into the narrative of Jewish history. " This collection of reports can be assumed to be one of the earliest publications of the Agudat Yisroel after its founding. The Agudat Yisrael is a political movement of Orthodox Jewry, founded at a conference in Kattowitz (Upper Silesia; today Katowice, Poland) in May 1912. The 300 delegates at the Kattowitz conference faced the complex and challenging task of overriding very real differences among traditional communities in Germany, Russia, Poland, Lithuania, Hungary, and elsewhere. The goal in forming Agudas Yisroel was to create an overarching, 'ecumenical' Orthodox identity to be shared by all these communities, represented by one organization. A compromise view prevailed, and individual communities were allowed to make their own decisions at local and regional levels. Though some steps were taken to set up a larger organization, including plans for establishing a world body of Agudas Yisroel to be called the Kenesiyah Gedolah (Great Assembly) , the outbreak of World War I made plans to convene such a conference in August 1914 impossible. Consequently, the first international assembly did not take place until 1923. - YIVO Encyclopedia. Subjects: Orthodox Judaism - Congresses. Agudat Israel. OCLC lists 11 copies. ' Wraps list: Pest, 1871, Selbstverlag der Verfassers (self-published by the author) ; however title page lists 1870. Treatise on botanic science in the Talmud written by Rabbi Moritz Duschak (1815-1890) ; Austrian rabbi and author. He was a pupil in Talmud of R. Moses Sofer of Presburg, and was for a long time rabbi at Gaya, Moravia. In 1877 he became preacher in Cracow and teacher of religion at the gymnasium of that city. He was a modern preacher and the author of works in the German language. Although engaged to deliver his sermons at the Temple, his sympathies were mostly with the old-style Orthodox people of the 'Klaus, ' who could better appreciate his Talmudical knowledge. His position as preacher was thus somewhat anomalous; and after several years' service he left Cracow and settled in Vienna, where he spent his last days in neglect and disappointment. - 1906 JE. 1915Later Cloth. 8vo. [194] pages. 23 cm. First edition. In German. 'Asaf Judaeus, the oldest medical writer in the Hebrew language'. A landmark study on the Sefer Asaf, the earliest known Hebrew work on medicine, extant in 16 manuscripts, some complete; it constitutes a source of information on ancient customs and Jewish medical ethics as well as of ancient Jewish remedies and Hebrew, Aramaic, Persian, Latin, and Greek medical terminology. Excerpts from Greek medical books, some of which have been lost and are not known from any other sources, appear in Hebrew in this book. The most complete manuscripts are in Munich, Oxford, Brit. Museum London, Florence, and Paris. The book was not written by Asaph himself, but by his disciples. They mention, as teachers, R. Johanan b. Zavda and R. Judah ha-Yarhoni, as well as Asaph. Some sections of the book are very old, though others were written or translated from other languages as late as the seventh until the tenth century. The antiquity of the work is apparent from its style, similar to that of the older Midrashim, from its use of Persian (rather than Arabic) synonyms, and from the mention of weights current in Palestine during the talmudic period. - EJ 2008. Collection of the three parts of Asaf Judaeus published in the periodical: Jahresbericht der Franz-Josef-Landes-Rabbinerschule in Budapest; this collection spans the issues 38-40. Other material from the Jahresbericht is contained in the collection (namely, the annual report of the Franz Josef Landes-Rabbinerschule in Budapest for the years 1915-17) ; however, this bound collection of the Jahresbericht is specifically of Asaf Judaeus. Written by Lajos Venetianer (18671922) , Hungarian rabbi and historian He edited the publications of the first Jewish medical writers in linguistic and medical-historical respects: Asaf Judaeus (13, 191517) , a work of pioneering importance despite the sharp criticism that Immanuel Loew leveled against it. - EJ 2008. Volume one published 1856, volume two, 1857, volume three, 1864, volume four, 1870. Moritz Abraham Levy (1817-1872) , German Orientalist ... Having received a rabbinical education, he became teacher in the Synagogen-Gemeinde of Breslau, where he was active for nearly thirty years. For his scientific labors he received from the King of Prussia, in 1865, the title of professor. Levy was preeminent in the field of Semitic paleography. He was the first person after Gesenius to treat the subject in a comprehensive manner. In the deciphering and interpretation of Phenician, old Hebrew, Punic, Aramaic, Himyaritic, and later Hebrew coins, seals, gems, and monuments his peculiar intuition guided him more surely than mere philological knowledge did others; such, for example, was the case with his deduction from the inscriptions found on the Hauran that at the beginning of the Christian era an Arabic people lived there which used the Aramaic language and alphabet. - 1906 JE. 1912Original Wraps. 8vo. 91 pages. 20 cm. First edition. In German. 'The Future of the Jews. ' A controversial work on the economic position of diaspora Jewry. Werner Sombart (18631941) , German political economist and sociologist. Born in Ermsleben, Sombart acquired a reputation through his work Der Moderne Kapitalismus (2 vols. , 1902, 1916) in which he traced the development of capitalism from the late Middle Ages. In 1917 he was appointed professor of political economy at the University of Berlin. He wrote two works on capitalism and the Jews: Die Juden und das Wirtschaftsleben (1911; The Jews and Modern Capitalism, 1913, 1951) , and Die Zukunft der Juden (1912) which aroused considerable controversy. In Sombart's view, the Jews were the principal cause of the disruption of the medieval economic system and its replacement by capitalism. The Jews, he held, were foreigners and came up against the hostility of the guilds which controlled the commerce of the medieval cities. Consequently they sought to break away from the restrictive economic framework of city life and, by doing so, became the pioneers of international trade. In this way they helped to lay the foundation of the capitalist system. Sombart maintained that the Jewish intellect, 'concrete, stubborn, and systematic, ' was ideally suited to fostering a capitalist economy: 'When Israel appears upon the face of Europe, the place where it appears comes to life; and when it departs, everything which had previously flourished withers away. ' Such statements made for the ambivalent reception of Sombart's work among Jews at the time. Thus, while liberal Jews strongly criticized Sombart as an antisemite, others, particularly in the Zionist camp, praised him as a nonpartisan researcher and held up his theses as evidence of Jewish perseverance and as acknowledgement of the special contribution of the Jews. - EJ 2008.
