2012New English Paperback. Pbo. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In English. 144 p. " It all happened in 1876, during "the Year of the Three Sultans" when a Bulgarian girl named Stephana made a journey to Salonika to convert to Islam and was subsequently abducted by a group of Christians. This event stoked tensions, and stirred outrage within the Muslim community. Public protests ensued, culminating in the murder of the French and German consuls by a Muslim mob on May 6, 1876. This 'Salonika Incident' would consequently trigger a wave of hysteria throughout the West and among the Christian populations of the Ottoman Empire. There was fear of an 'impending massacre of the Christians' which would never take place. A diplomatic war of words between the Sublime Porte and the Great Powers, which held the former accountable for this double crime, directly followed the incident. Through a detailed and meticulous account of this neglected episode of Ottoman-Balkan history, this book aims to cast light on an often distorted and highly misunderstood event which is a manifestation of Western attitudes toward the Ottoman Empire during the climactic years of the Eastern Question.".

1980Spine is sunned. Scholar's name stamped to ffep (P. Stork). ; Absolute dates of events in ancient history have been difficult to calculate because of the complex adjustments and computations involved. The methods of relative dating developed by archaeologists and of direct dating established by modern science depend upon the interpretation of historical material which is virtually inaccessible. Using dates supplied by the ancients themselves, Bickerman suggests the means to convert them into units of our own dating system, thus providing an invaluable reference for all students of the ancient world. ; Aspects of Greek and Roman Life; 253 pages
1991Creasing to spine. Light edgewear to spine ends and 1 corner. Front upper corner bumped with creasing through pages. ; This book is the first detailed study of the plays of Sophocles through examination of a single ethical principle--the traditional Greek popular moral code of "helping friends and harming enemies." Five of the extant plays are discussed in detail from both a dramatic and an ethical standpoint, and the author concludes that ethical themes are not only integral to each drama, but are subjected to an implicit critique through the tragic consequences to which they give rise. Greek scholars and students of Greek drama and Greek thought will welcome this book, which is presented in such a way as to be accessible to specialists and nonspecialists alike. No knowledge of Greek is required. ; 312 pages

DJ spine is browned. ; In the quest for the original Homeric text, Bolling's strategy is to begin, not with an 'Ur-text' as some earlier scholars had attempted, but with the poems as they appear at the beginning of our tradition, and to 'remove the accretions stratum by stratum, as in the excavation of a buried temple'. He attempts to reconstruct the earlier texts of the Iliad and Odyssey by not only identifying and eliminating interpolations, but by understanding the traditions of the earlier interpolators and editors and thus establishing a standard for future work. ; 259 pages
