Best.-Nr. 1631New York: Harper & Row Publishers 1970. First American Edition. A superlative copy of the Nobel Prize winner's masterpiece and likely the most widely-read Spanish language novel aside from 'Don Quixote.' The present example is a review copy with the publisher's typed slip laid in; the slip differs from other Harper & Row review slips from the same period in that in states "IMPORTANT: please note that this is UNCORRECTED PROOF." Also laid into this copy is a brief one page typed letter from Harper & Row publisher Cass Canfield Jr. to Dr. Howard B. Gotlieb former Director of Special Collections at Boston University. The letter is dated 21 October 1969 - some four months prior to publication of the book - and mentions the enclosure of an advance proof of 'One Hundred Years of Solitude.' It isn't lost on us that the copy these materials came to us in is not an uncorrected proof of which we presently know of exactly 2 copies. We can only surmise that these proof materials were placed into this copy of the book in-house; Canfield whose business card is also laid into the book may have decided that Gotlieb should receive a hardbound copy and not a paperbound proof and thus would have placed the materials in one of the first hard copies manufactured. Evidence supporting copies in dustjacket with the "." on the front flap being printed prior to publication is discussed at length in Don Klein's 'Gabriel García Márquez: Una Bibliografía Descriptiva Tomo II.' In it Klein mentions that two editorial heads at Harper & Row received review copies directly from the printer both in jackets ending in "." Additionally the review copy received by translator Gregory Rabassa bore a jacket also ending in a "." and not the exclamation mark p.635-636. And while we are fully cognisant that review materials often migrate from copy-to-copy within the trade sufficient evidence is present that the migration here was more than likely the publisher's doing. The only such copy we have handled the only other known to us being the bibliographer's copy. Klein E2.a.1. First Printing one of 7500 copies. Octavo; hunter green cloth with titles stamped in gilt on spine; variant with headband in olive green and yellow no established priority; dustjacket; xiii 422pp 1 blank. We have been able to locate only one other copy of this work also a Danish translation from 1815 but lacking the map manuscript and printed in Danish Swedish or Norwegian. Despite the fact that the Strait of Sunda was sailed relatively frequently by European sailors Krusenstern's 1813-memoir is one of the earliest reliable pilots to this strait. From the present memoire: "Although a strait so important as that of Sunda frequented every year by more than 50 European ships ought to be as one would naturally suppose perfectly well known; notwithstanding which after having examined the charts of these coasts reputed the best I venture to say that I have been convinced that there does not exit one with which one can be entirely satisfied". 1821Best.-Nr. 20381Milano: Presso Paolo Antonio Tosi & Comp. Typof Gio. Perottaography 1821. Hardcover. Pebbled cloth spines and corners. Marbled paper pastedown on boards. Very Good. A magisterial work on the immense symbolic and allegorical vocabulary used in painting and sculpture in the early Modern era. While no work could possibly encompass every iconographic essay nor hope to capture the infinite variants on particular iconographic notions this work comes as close as possible and brings order to the subject that probably baffles many a modern museum goer. Plus the illustrations are pleasing in and of themselves. 4to. Vol. 1: xii 17-240 8 pp. Missing pages with descriptions of plates 1 to 8. Vol. 2: 1-240 8 pp. Plate volume: 240 hand-colored etched plates all painted by Pistrucci. Think of a human personality trait or of any allegorical painting's subject and Pistrucci renders a version that captures the typical representation of it. Often times the representation is of a dichotomy such as day and night east and west early and late fertility and sterility. Pistrucci's style befits the mythological tenor of the genre and one can easily imagine the same images as part of the stately decoration of a monument an august public edifice a theater -- the ceiling fresco a frieze a sculpted pediment. Scattered light soiling including occasional foxing. Plates are generally clean and bright. Both volumes rebacked with black cloth spine labels preserved and mounted. Both copies tight. Moderate wear along edges. As mentioned already pages 1-16 missing from the first volume. Presso Paolo Antonio Tosi & Comp. Typof Gio. Perottaography hardcover

Subtly titled in blind across one of the onlays at the spine. Paper doublures with dyed calf hinges. Botehlo writes of this book being "filled with etchings of heavy lined and voluptuous shapes with textures and shade all done in black. The poetry evoked for me the verdancy of rogue plants that spring up between the cracks of concrete. It spoke of the appeal of being a snake allusions to original sin. I wanted the green onlays that have been dyed and embossed to be pillowed the stone inviting touch. I intended to create something that invites a sensory exploration." And here she has succeeded with astonishing grace creating a design that draws and keeps the attention. Wonderfully conceived and executed with exceptional skill. Best.-Nr. 43935Amsterdam: En Casa de Joris Trigg/ D. Efraim Bueno y Jona Abravanel 5412. Hardcover. g- to vg-. Duoecimo. 7x4.5". 478pp. Original dark brown leather with blind-stamped ruling and tooling on the covers and spine. Raised bands on the spine. Metal clasps. Red-speckled edges of the book block. An early Spanish-language edition of the complete Jewish High Holiday prayer book Machzor based on the original translation by Abraham Usque originally printed in Ferarra Italy in 1553. This edition contains some added material not previously present including most prominently Solomon ibn Gabirol's famed philosophical poem "Keter Malkhut" Royal Crown which over the years has come to be read as part of the Yom Kippur service in some Jewish traditions. Published by Dr. Efraim Bueno and Jona Abravanel to serve members of the then sizable Sephardic Jewish community in Amsterdam. A significant portion of the community were former Conversos Jews who had outwardly converted to Catholicism during the inquisition in Spain who then emmigrated and were able to reestablish their Jewish identity and thus were unable to read Hebrew hence the text's publication in Spanish. As stated in the foreword this edition includes some additions to the text not included in previous versions and omits some material deemed to have been unnecessary. The prayer book starts with the penitential prayers Selichot p.3-47 which includes decorative head and endpeices. This section is followed by the Rosh Hashanah service p.48-195 and then the Yom Kippur service including the "Keter Malkhut" p.254-289. Title page is has a decorative vignette printed in woodblock and is printed with the Hebrew date "5412". Pages 305-352 are misprinted as "321-368" with their correct numbers handwritten above in ink. All text in Spanish. Binding with some rubbing and scratches to extremities and to the covers. Front hinge starting to split slightly at the head and tail of the spine. Missing one of the metal clasps on the back cover. Starting at interior covers. Some minor to light sporadic damp staining and foxing throughout the text. Period signature of the previous owner "Silva" in ink on on the title page and p.200. Name of another previous owner in ink on the interior back cover. Book block tight overall. Binding in good- interior in very good- condition overall. Quite scarce. Dr. Efraim Ephraim Bueno aka Martin Alvarez 1599-1665 was a Portuguese-born Jewish physician in Amsterdam of the famed Iberian-Jewish Bueno medical dynasty and prominent member of the city's Sephardic community. He served for many years as the personal physician to famed artist Rembrandt van Rijn who in fact depicted Bueno in two of his works one an etching and the other a painted portrait. He received his medical education and degree in Bordeaux and was known to have practiced medicine in Amsterdam until the time of his death. In addition to his medical practice Bueno was an accomplished biblical scholar who along with Jona Abravanel published numerous Jewish works the on the bible and Jewish Law. Jona Abravanel 1593-1667 was a Sephardic Jewish poet in Amsterdam from the prominent Abravanel family. He was the nephew of Famed Portueguse-Dutch Rabbi and printer Menasseh ben Israel. Together with his uncle and Dr. Efraim Bueno he was responsible for publishing numerous works of Judiaca in the 17th century. In this edition the title page was mistaken printed with the word "Kuyper" which was then correct via a scrap of paper pasted on top. A scarce and significant documentation of the United States' absorption German rocket technology at the dawning of the Cold War and also its enlistment of German scientists including Werner von Braun and Major General Dr. Walter Dornberger. The three large accession lists the Index and the Glossary were produced by the Foreign Document Evaluation Branch Development and Proof Services Aberdeen Proving Ground Maryland. The five volumes were produced to streamline access to the massive array of engineering documents taken out of Germany and to facilitate the work of German and American scientists in jump-starting the American missile program. We could locate only three institutions with a set of all five volumes the Smithsonian Libraries and Archives; Museum of Flight Seattle WA; and NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Library MD. These volumes document the orderly transfer of knowledge about rocketry weapons programs and the earliest stirrings of a space program from Nazi Germany to the United States. They are mostly bibliographies of technological literature in German with a focus on the V-2 rocket. Ordnance Department, Army Service Forces unknown

1953Best.-Nr. 000662New York: Etting Emlen Self Published 1953. Soft cover. Very Good. 8 1/2 x 11. Etting Emlen. Emlen Etting's unpublished translation original manuscript with his 6 watercolor drawings for that of Rainer Maria Rilke's prose poen The Song of Love and Death of Standard-Bearer Christoph Rilke Cornet Christoph Rilke. Typed manuscript title page 28 pp. dated 1953 with pencil ms. emendations and six original erotic ink and water-color illustrations by noted painter Emlen Etting signed. The manuscript is typed on standard 8 1/2 x 11 paper while the water-color illustrations are on the verso of blank letterhead of the Philadelphia chapter of the Artists Equity Association of which Etting was at the time Chairman that paper being watermarked parchment stationery. Includes original shipping envelope see images. An unpublished translation of Rainer Maria Rilke's prose poem 1899 of war love and sex and the surreal but heroic death of Christoph Rilke in the seventeenth century accompanied by what would have been its erotic illustrations. Slumbering nudes mortally wounded heroes in the buff and love-making couples appear to be thematically revised as proofs. The original manila envelope in which all this was contained is included addressed from Etting at his Philadelphia address to himself in care of Midtown Galleries in New York City and says in part "6 Preparatory Sketches for 'Lovers' / Rilke's Song of Love and Death of the Standard-Bearer". Rilke's singular prose poem published as part of other titles but apparently never separately was by the name Cornet Christoph Rilke's Song of Love and Death and other variants the basis of an opera by Siegfried Matthus a symphony by Viktor Ullmann and other artistic treatments. Etting's translation here carries alternately and sometimes together stark surreal dreamlike melodic and poetic tone presumably true to the Rilke original the reading of which in its original language I am incapable. In any case here it is deeply and strangely moving in its own right. I found myself reading it aloud as if it were a play. Title sheet of manuscript slightly torn at top see scan; some see- through from verso of the water-colors. Overall better than very good. Not bound. A - somehow - spooky feeling pervades this set IMO. Ain't but one like this. LG-1 Etting, Emlen (Self Published) paperback

Fisher 1908-1992 contributed an introduction to the second Arion Press book "A Commonplace Book of Cookery" in 1975 but died before we were able to pay tribute to her by publishing her first major literary work a translation of Jean Anthelme Brillat-Savarin's 1755-1826 famous gastronomic essays. This book originally made for hire in 1948 for the Limited Editions Club formed her as an author on subjects relating to food wine dining and living well in the largest sense. She became a good friend of the Press extending invitations to "the crew" to come to her home in St. Helena for a hike and a swim followed by lunch where the conversation was always lively but never about food. The artist Wayne Thiebaud delivered to Hoyem a large pile of original ink drawings and told him to use what he wanted. Hoyem made photocopies of the drawings and sorted and combined them as he saw fit and Thiebaud immediately approved the selection. He also made the nine lithographs in color and drew a design for the cover of the binding that showed the skills he learned as a commercial graphic artist. A trade edition was published by Counterpoint in 1996. Note that while this copy is marked as a "Display" copy we do not believe it was actually used as such as both the book and slipcase are in fine condition. ___POSTAGE: International customers please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. The project was undertaken by writer translator and editor Nathan Haskell Dole a popular member of the Boston literary set. Educated at Philips Andover and Harvard he was much influenced by family friends like Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and Oliver Wendell Holmes Sr. He showed an early facility for languages teaching himself to read French German Greek and Latin. Our set was designed by Dole to be the crown jewel of a library combining beauty and luxury with Classical erudition. The bindings here are unsigned but are very similar to those on a copy of this work in the Phoebe Boyle sale bound by the Adams Bindery. Ralph Randolph Adams was along with Henry Stikeman and a handful or others one of the great American art bookbinders of his era. His workshop produced bindings of notable beauty and craftsmanship. The New York Times 11 October 1902 described an Adams binding as "so exquisite in design and execution that those long skeptical of the ability of Americans to bind artistically should now be convinced of their error. . . . It is to be hoped that all American binders will be encouraged to strive toward producing designs like Adams' that are in a measure original and which show more of the individual touch of the artist.". Chemise or inner folder -- thick glossy card stock all sides other than that has red calf with title label. Emily Swinton. Magnificent illuminated manuscript version of the Rubaiyat or some verses from the Rubaiyat. The illuminated borders are singular -- their design is unlike that we are familiar with and not even vaguely similar to anything we have ever seen produced by a latter-day illuminator professional or amateur. Their tracery is of blues greens reds some yellow in a few instances and not least the all important gilt. The illuminator surely was paying homage to some Islamic and Persian illumination in her palette but overall these sources are but influences; the illuminations are far from merely imitative. The design pulls you in and as one gazes longer one will discover small figurative imagery woven into the lines and swirls of the larger ornamentation. Words are beyond us to come close to capturing their complexity and character -- our photos hopefully will impart something of that. Let us just say the colors are deep and bold. Within these extraordinary borders is the calligraphic text rendered in a stunning easily legible Gothic Fraktur script. And there are four dream-like miniature watercolors as well of scenic Persian villages. N.d. circa early 1920s. 4to. 28.5 by 19 cm. Unpaginated 14 leaves with illumination -- illumination on one side. The back side of the leaf then left blank. Tissue guards for each page with illumination. The first leaf has no text -- it is a rectangular abstract design suggestive perhaps of a spectacular rug and inspired by such illuminated painting as one finds in many an antiquarian Koran. The next leaf is the title page with the words appearing to float on the page. The lettering has a distinctive verticality and the gilt letters are both clearly the letters they are supposed to be but have an abstraction that one can imagine they are Arabic script as well. The last two leaves with a more restrained formalistic illumination has evenly spaced dome-shaped pointers as one finds in Koranic decoration to highlight important passages. The binding slipcase and chemise are functional but don't really do the contents justice. Other than some crease marks on the calf and light wear overall to these protective features the binding and slipcase present no issues. unknown
