1848réf. 47660Krotoschin Krotoszyn: B. L. Monasch & Sohn 1848. First German edition. Hardcover. g to vg. Octavo. viii 315 1 558 392pp. Bound in modern brown half-cloth over decorative paper-covered boards with gilt lettering and decorative ruling on spine. Light brown endpapers. The author Isaac Aboab lived in Toledo at the end of the 14th century. His Hebrew work Menorath HaMe'or "The Candelabrum of Light" is a classic ethical work. It became immensely popular among the Jews in the Middle Ages with more than seventy editions printed. Originally written in Hebrew it was translated into Spanish Ladino Yiddish and German with the 1st edition printed in Constantinople in 1514. "Developing the image of the seven-branched candlestick cf. Num. 4:9 Isaac divides his work into seven nerot "lamps". These in turn are subdivided into main divisions parts and chapters. Using the three parts of Psalms 34:15 as general headings he assigns the seven lamps to them in the following manner: a "Depart from evil" 1 guard against envy lust ambition; 2 be wary of sins attendant upon speech. b "Do good" 3 observance of mitzvot such as circumcision rearing of children prayer festivals honoring parents founding a family charity justice; 4 study of Torah; 5 repentance. c "Seek peace and pursue it" 6 peace and love for fellowman; and 7 humility. Into this rather loose framework lsaac fitted a wealth of aggadic material culled from the Talmud and the vast midrashic literature. His use of passages from aggadic works now lost and the variants in the talmudic and midrashic texts he cites make the Menorat ha-Ma'or of great importance for establishing the text of the Talmud used in the Spanish-North African academies as distinct from that of the Franco-German school. Isaac is selective in using esoteric texts and he fights shy of statements that may provoke doubt and heresy." -see:encyclopedia dot com. The translation by R. J. Fürstenthal was completed by Benzion Behrend. Block somewhat browned with sporadic light foxing. Water stain at lower foredge and bottom visible for about fifty pages. Binding in overall very good interior in good condition. B. L. Monasch & Sohn hardcover

1981réf. 1219New York: Viking Press 1981 Viking New York 1981. First edition first printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. A nice copy of the author's first American publication. Heavy Sand is an epic story of four generations of a Jewish family living in Communist Russia and its life in a ghetto during the Nazi occupation culminating in their participation in a ghetto uprising. Though the story of the ghetto uprising is fictional some details of it seem to be based on the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto. It is believed that the novel is based on numerous stories collected by Rybakov from people who survived the Nazi occupation of Ukraine. This story was dubbed the "first Russian Holocaust novel" by one of the Western newspapers of the time. The book became a television series in 2008. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 1920réf. 28553London: Humphrey Milford; Oxford University Press 1920. First English language edition. Hardcover. vg. Octavo. XXII 161pp English 59pp Hebrew. Original blue cloth with gold lettering on spine. Berechiah ben Natronai ha-Nakdan "ha-Nakdan" meaning "the punctuator" or "grammarian" commonly known as Berachya 13th century was a Jewish exegete ethical writer grammarian translator poet and philosopher. His most famous works are Mishle Shualim Fox Fables and Sefer Hahibbur The Book of Compilation. Very little is known for certain about his life and much discussion has taken place concerning the date and native country of Berachyah. It is possible that he was a descendant of Jewish scholars of Babylonia. He is thought to have lived sometime in the 12th or 13th century with some placing him about 1260 in Provence. Other theories give Northern France as his home while Joseph Jacobs arrived at the conclusion that Berechiah should be located in England toward the end of the 12th century. This was confirmed by Neubauer's discovery that in the preface to his fables Berechiah refers to the "turning of the wheels of fate to the island of the sea = England for one to die and the other to live" clearly a reference to the English massacre of 1190 From WIKIPEDIA. Very minor age-toning on spine. Previous owner's sticker on free front endpaper Abraham Steinmeier. Binding in overall good to very good interior in very good condition.
