The field is applied art as taught at a German university. This is not a textbook. It is instead a picture book a manual that makes visible the process of teaching and learning and the nature of the instriction process. The examples are exclusively the works of students guests and visitors of my evening seminars. I offer this book to teachers in elementary and secondary schools as well as professors at academies and universities. May it revitalize instruction provide food for throughr give encouragement and be a beacon in the desolation of contemporary education in handwriting. The ministers of culutral affairs and education have neglected any intelligent and intensive teaching of handwriting in any applicable departments. Such neglect is foolish as well as dangerous and should finally yield to the realization that our written heritage is an asset of extraordinary importance." ; large volume ; AS NEW New York, NY : Design Press, 1989 hardcover

Very good clean condition with unmarked text free of inscriptions and stamps firmly bound. Gentle handling wear. Issued without a dust jacket. -- An English-language exploration of the bridges of St Petersburg a city whose network of rivers canals and islands has made its crossings central not only to its infrastructure but to its identity. St Petersburg contains more than 400 bridges and this volume focuses on the most historically and architecturally significant among them tracing their construction reconstruction and cultural associations across three centuries of the city's life. -- This richly illustrated volume treats the city's bridges as both engineering works and emblems of place. Conceived in collaboration between an architectural historian and a leading Petersburg photo-artist it follows the spans over the Neva and the canal network from monumental river crossings to smaller more intimate structures. Medvednikov's photographs reproduced at generous scale linger on details that are easy to miss in passing - sculptural lanterns railings stonework and the play of light on water. They move across seasons and times of day from white nights and misty dawns to winter darkness and the ritual of drawbridges opening. People are present throughout so the city is seen not as empty postcard scenery but as a lived environment of pedestrians drivers and river traffic. Reproductions of 18th and 19th century engravings and lithographs are interleaved with the contemporary work inviting direct comparison between imperial Soviet and post Soviet cityscapes. The accompanying text situates individual bridges in the wider history of Petersburg's planning and architecture noting changing construction techniques and the way different bridge types mark out social and ceremonial routes. 1981réf. 1219New York: Viking Press 1981 Viking New York 1981. First edition first printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. A nice copy of the author's first American publication. Heavy Sand is an epic story of four generations of a Jewish family living in Communist Russia and its life in a ghetto during the Nazi occupation culminating in their participation in a ghetto uprising. Though the story of the ghetto uprising is fictional some details of it seem to be based on the uprising in the Warsaw ghetto. It is believed that the novel is based on numerous stories collected by Rybakov from people who survived the Nazi occupation of Ukraine. This story was dubbed the "first Russian Holocaust novel" by one of the Western newspapers of the time. The book became a television series in 2008. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine.
