1818pp. iv, 140 + Engraved Half Title decorated with a drawing of a woman lying on a shore with two men, black and white, looking on in horror. Small vignette on title page. Age staining. 125mm. Disbound. Paul et Virginie (or Paul and Virginia) is a novel by Jacques-Henri Bernardin de Saint-Pierre, first published in 1788. The novel's title characters are friends since birth who fall in love. The story is set on the island of Mauritius under French rule, then named Île de France. Written on the eve of the French Revolution, the novel is recognized as Bernardin's finest work. It records the fate of a child of nature corrupted by the artificial sentimentality of the French upper classes in the late eighteenth century. Bernardin lived on the island for a time and based part of the novel on a shipwreck he witnessed there." LIT BX 8

1933215 pages including exercises and vocabulary. "No writer put more of himself into his work than did Loti. The notes and references put Loti back into his story, infusing it with something of his own strange personality... Peculiar constructions and oddities of translation, so frequently explained in notes are, in this book, consigned to the vocabulary and exercises. The foot-notes (found on the very page) are thus limited to explanations destined to clarify or heighten the interest in the story." - from Preface. Average wear. Binding intact. Good working copy.
