From Preface: The principles which guided the writing of this commentary are expounded in the editorial Fore-work and require no elaboration. My one purpose has been to assist the reader to a deeper appreciation of this precious jewel in the spiritual treasury of Israel Among the Books of the Hebrew Scriptures the Psalter has always made the most direct appeal to the human heart. If this work succeeds in re-awakening in some men and women to-day the fervent love which involved will have been well expended. The Song of Songs is King Solomon's poem of love between G-d and the Jewish people couched in the metaphor of love between a man and a woman. The Book of Ruth tells the tale of the conversion of Ruth a Moabite woman who became the foremother of King David and ultimately the Messiah. The Book of Lamentations written by the prophet Jeremiah describes the sorrow of the destruction of the First Temple and the exile of the Jewish people. Ecclesiastes contains some of the wisdom of King Solomon. It focuses on the idea of the temporariness of the things of this world and emphasizes the importance of spiritual deeds. The Book of Esther tells the story of the holiday of Purim and how the Jews were saved from annihilation at the hands of the wicked Haman by the heroic Esther and Mordechai. Ultimately it shows how God is always at work behind the scenes even when His hand is not immediately apparent. The book of Kings describes the period of the Jewish monarchies in the Kingdoms of Judah and Israel beginning with the accession of King Solomon and ending with the exile of the Jewish people and the destruction of the First Temple. The history of Israel is inextricably bound up with the religion of Israel: they are the warp and woof of one fabric. Consequently the historical Books of the Bible are an indispensable source for the study of the development of Judaism. In them we read of the conflict between religion contaminated by heathen influences. From this point of view the Books of Kings are exceptional interest as well as being a record of the decline and fall of the Israelite monarchy.
