1947réf. 26415Paris: Les Editions du Cerf 1947. Softcover. g. Octavo. 274 2pp. Uncut. Original printed wrappers with printer's device on front cover. Fascinating French translation of the work of one of the most distinguished writers of the early Christian Church. Origen's chief aim was the practical exposition of the text verse by verse; and while in such barren books as Leviticus and Numbers he sought to allegorize the wealth of material in the prophets seldom rendered it necessary for him to seek meanings deeper than the surface afforded. Whether the sermons were delivered in series or the homilies on a single book were collected from various series is unknown. The homilies preserved are on Genesis Exodus Leviticus Numbers Joshua Judges I Samuel Psalms Canticles Isaiah Jeremiah Ezekiel and Luke. This book deals exclusively with Origen's homilies on Exodus. Some age wear on wrappers with spine and edges of covers age-toned. Pages age-toned throughout. Text in French. Wrappers and interior in overall good condition. About the author: born c. 185 probably Alexandria Egypt — died c. 254 Tyre Phoenicia Greek theologian one of the Fathers of the Church. Probably the son of a Christian martyr Origen studied philosophy in Alexandria and served as head of its catechetical school for 20 years. He later settled in Palestine and founded a school of philosophy and theology. He traveled widely as a preacher; he was imprisoned and tortured during the persecutions of the emperor Decius in 250 but survived to die several years later. His greatest work the Hexapla is a synopsis of six versions of the Hebrew scriptures. His writings influenced by Neoplatonism and Stoicism stress that providence seeks to restore all souls to their original blessedness and emphasize the centrality of the Word Logos in the cosmos. He held that even Satan was not beyond repentance and salvation a view for which he was condemned. Although attacked as a heretic Origen remained an influential thinker throughout late antiquity and the Middle Ages. Les Editions du Cerf unknown books
