1899Large folio, First and Sole Edition, on fine laid paper, with 47 fine separate large collotype facsimiles, each accompanied by a printed leaf bearing the transliterated text with variants and revisions as appropriate; disbound as issued, uncut, the collection housed in the publisher's original and substantial cloth portfolio, front lettered in gilt, gilt back, with original lock, the portfolio neatly and skilfully refurbished at several joints and the whole work in very good, clean state. Mild bookplate scar on inner cover of portfolio. In addition to the superb facsimiles, the work includes the editor's preface, and printed leaves of errata, notes and index. 'Each page of the MS. has been represented as far as possible by ordinary type, the words and letters printed in italic being those which in the MS. are struck out by the writer. It will be observed that some words in italic are underlined in the MS. This is to indicate that although they had been struck out they were to be restored. The peculiarities which could not be represented by the use of ordinary type are recorded in the Notes.' (Preface). Milton's manuscript volume remains the chief treasure of the College Library. EXTREMELY SCARCE. Stevens 304.

Wagner, Portcullis Pursuivant of Arms, 4 Oct 1933' ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPER. In the late eighteenth century, the BM thoroughly revised the previous Cottonian catalogue (Smith, 1696) under the principal editorship of Planta. The mammoth revision was completed in 1800 and published on the instructions of the Royal Commission on public records. It remains the best published catalogue. Joseph Planta (1744-1827) succeeded his father as assistant librarian at the BM in 1773, was promoted to Keeper of Manuscripts in 1776 and finally to Principal Librarian from 1799-1827. See CDNB: III, 1397. Interestingly the printer, Luke Hansard, began printing the 'House of Commons Journal' in 1774; it is commonly known as 'Hansard' to this day. A SPLENDID ASSOCIATION COPY. Gross/Graves, 994.

This remarkable sale comprises 850 lots. 'The collection is primarily of English literature, with emphasis on the sixteenth through the nineteenth centuries. The few excursions outside that range are exceptional books and manuscripts. Almost all that Houghton acquired is of superlative quality and interest - frequently the kind of item that causes one to be astonished that it should even exist. For example, of just over seventy-five Short-title Catalogue books appearing in the first part of the sale, more than a dozen are either unique, or the only known perfect copy, or the only one yet remaining in private hands'. Foreword. Houghton's watchwords were association, condition and rarity. Among the manuscripts are long runs of letters from Elizabeth and Robert Browning, two letters from Evelyn to Pepys, and the earliest holograph draft of Locke's 'Essay', arguably the most important of all English philosophical manuscripts in private hands. The descriptions are appropriately detailed, with full collations and standard references for virtually every item, making the two volumes a valuable bibliographical resource. A BRIGHT SET OF AN IMPORTANT CATALOGUE.
