Inserted leaf from the Bible printed by Robert Aitken Philadelphia 1782 from Deuteronomy; and 8 illustrations. 34 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. From an edition limited to 580 copies this is one of 515 copies in the "Colonial Edition" printed for John Howell Books by the Grabhorn Press and containing an essay by Edwin Grabhorn on typography in America in 1776. This volume contains an original leaf from a copy of the Aitken Bible one of the most celebrated American bibles being the first complete English Bible printed in America. During the colonial era the monopoly on printing English bibles belonged to the Royal Printer and the colonies were supplied entirely with bibles printed in England. The only Bible printed in the British colonies in America was the famous Eliot Indian Bible in Algonquian issued in Cambridge in 1661-63 and reprinted in 1680-85. With the Revolution this monopoly naturally ended and the embargo on goods from England acted to create a shortage. Aitken a Philadelphia printer undertook the task producing the New Testament in 1781 and the Old Testament in 1782. On completion he petitioned the Continental Congress for their endorsement and received it in September 1782. Because of this official endorsement and the reasons behind its production the Aitken Bible is often referred to as "The Bible of the Revolution" Grabhorn Bibliography 131 Printed by Edwin & Robert Grabhorn for John Howell at the Sign of the Open Book unknown books

Thomas Dunn English 1819-1902 was a proilific author of poems ballads and novels; he also server two terms in the U.S. Congress as a Representative from New Jersey; but his fame as a writer rests on the ballad in wrote in 1843 "Ben Bolt." First published in Nathaniel Parker Willis' magazine NEW YORK MIRROR "Ben Bolt" was set to music many times and became very popular especiallly in the version set to a tune by Nelson Kneass. In his note appended to this transcription of the poem English writes: "The foregoing stanzas are as they originally appeared in Willis & Morris's NEW YORK NEW MIRROR in the year 1843. Though they have been set to music eight tiimes the only popular melody was the one take from a German air by Kneass. The words there - three stanzas only being taken - are very much mutilated." "It was hugely successful at the time but had a new lease of life as the song that Trilby O'Ferrall sings in the novel TRILBY 1894 by George du Maurier. It is described in the novel as an 'unsophisticated little song' but when Trilby performs it under the influence of the sinister hypnotist Svengali it reawakens a 'cosmic vision of the beauty and sadness of things' in her former lover Little Billee." Derek B. Scott THE SINGING BOURGEOIS: SONGS OF THE VICTORIAN DRAWING ROOM AND PARLOUR. Aldershot Hampshire; Burlington VT: Ashgate 2001. Ironically "Ben Bolt" being a tribute to a long-lasting friendship English is also remembered as the bitter foe of his former friend Edgar Allan Poe. The two had a falling out which resulted in a fist fight as well as a long running literary feud. unknown books

1681ref. 1278921681. ENGLISH LAW. Proceedings Upon Impeachments from the year 1666 to the year 1681. Manuscript. No place circa 1681. Quarto modern full brown calf raised bands red morocco spine label. $3200.Original manuscript from the late 17th century with the parliamentary impeachment proceedings against 14 individuals during the reign of Charles II.The accountsÑwritten in legible script with an index at frontÑbegin with the proceedings against Viscount Mordaunt charged with raping the daughter of the surveyor of Windsor Castle when Mordaunt was the castle's constable. Although they include a number of cases including that of William Penn in 1668 the clear focus is on the Popish plot a supposed conspiracy promulgated in 1678 that led to the arrest and trial of five Catholic lordsÑBaron Arundell the Marquess of Powis Baron Belasyse Baron Petre and Viscount StaffordÑall of which are recounted in this manuscript. As anticatholic hysteria waned and it became increasingly clear that the ""plot"" was a fiction the fallout entrapped more of the players: the impeachment of William Scroggs who served as the Chief Justice during the trials is detailed as is that of the Lord High Treasurer the Earl of Danby who was charged with concealing the plot and Edward Fitzharris who had attempted to implicate Danby in Sir Edmondbury Godfrey's murder in 1678 an event which fanned the flames of anticatholic hysteria.
