1763réf. AQ33109London: Printed for J. Knox 1763. viii 184pp. With six engraved plates. Contemporary gilt-tooled sheep. Rubbed and lightly marked loss to head of spine. Marbled endpapers Recent bookplate of Liam Sims to FEP scattered spotting. An anonymous mid-eighteenth-century English translation of the only extant work of inconspicuous second-century Hellenistic author Longus. The novel considered the first pastoral prose narrative concerns two foundlings raised by shepherds who fall in love. They are later kidnapped and separated but ultimately reunited. Daphnis and Chloe is distinguished by its singular exploration of eroticism; concertedly focused on the physical aspects of romantic relationships with particular comments on masochism and rape. The novel served as inspiration for Sir Philip Sidney's Arcadia 1590 and was the source book for Shakespeare's As You Like It. ESTC T141479. Fourth edition. 12mo. Printed for J. Knox unknown
