A formidable courtroom advocate he became widely admired as a strong but moderate judge. Russell practiced law in Ireland from 1854 and in England usually at Liverpool from 1859. In 1872 he was appointed a queen's counsel. A Liberal Party member of the House of Commons from 1880 to 1894 he served as attorney general under Prime Minister William Ewart Gladstone in 1886 and again in 1892 - 94. Although he was sympathetic to Irish nationalism he urged the establishment of an Irish Parliament subordinate to England's rather than the granting of Home Rule which would have given the Irish wider power. In 1888 - 90 he gained fame as principal defense counsel before the Parnell Commission by discrediting much of the testimony against the Irish nationalist leader Charles Stewart Parnell especially that based on a letter forged by a journalist Richard Pigott. Created a lord of appeal in May 1894 Russell then was appointed lord chief justice of England on the death of John Duke Baron Coleridge June 14 1894. His reputation as a great judge was secured by his conduct of the trial of L.S. Jameson and other British subjects who had abortively invaded the Boer state of the Transvaal December 1895 - January 1896. In 1899 he participated in the successful arbitration of the Venezuela - British Guiana boundary dispute that had threatened to lead to war between Great Britain and the United States. - Britannica The United States Catholic Historical Society hardcover books

Charles V 1500-1558 was a Fleming royal of the Austrian House of Habsburg and the Castillan House of Trastamara who ruled the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation from 1519 as Emperor Charles V the Spanish Empire from 1516 as King Charles I and the Low Countries from 1506 as Duke Charles II. The Spanish conquest of the Aztecs and Incas and the German colonisation of Venezuela both occurred during his reign. Charles V revitalized the medieval concept of the universal monarchy of Charlemagne and travelled from city to city with no single fixed capital: overall he spent 28 years in the Habsburg Netherlands primarily Bruxelles 18 years in Spain notably Toledo and Extremadura and 9 years in Germany. "After four decades of incessant warfare with the Kingdom of France the Ottoman Empire and the Protestants Charles V abandoned his multi-national project with a series of abdications between 1554 and 1556 in favor of his son Philip II of Spain and his own brother Ferdinand of Austria. The personal union of his European and American territories spanning over nearly 4 million square kilometres 1.545000 square miles was the first collection of realms to be defined as "the empire on which the sun never sets." 1921ref. 56000Rome: La Vita Italiana 1921. First Italian edition. Softcover. g- to g. Octavo. 190 1pp. Tan paper wrappers with text in black and red on covers and spine. Translator not credited. The first Italian edition of the infamous and influential anti-Semitic forgery is quite scarce and is the only edition to have been published prior to the Fascist takeover of the country which occurred the following year. The book includes the full text of the Protocols and introductory comments as well as an extensive 60-page appendix at the rear prepared by publisher Giovanni Preziosi. Initial text at the front of the publication also includes Italian translations of the preface from the original 1920 London edition and the original introductory text from the 1905 Russian edition. It is interesting to note that even this early in the publication history of the Protocols editors were already admitting to the questionable authenticity of the text that they were so rabidly promoting as can be seen in the introductory comments here. The publication was issued by the right-wing political journal La Vita Italiana which was headed by prominent Italian anti-Semitic and nationalist writer Giovanni Preziosi 1881-1945 who would go on to become a prominent figure in Italian Fascist publishing. Wrappers with light staining and sunning. Spine with closed tears and rubbing to the head and tail. Interior with foxing to the half-title pages as well as additional sporadic minor to light foxing to additional pages throughout. Book block loosening at the title page. Wrappers in good- interior in good condition overall. Subtitle: Versione Italiana con Appendice Scarce edition with only 2 holdings in North America per OCLC. La Vita Italiana unknown books
