1886réf. 1304911886. First Edition. FLAUBERT Gustave. Madame Bovary. Provincial Manners. London: Vizetelly 1886. Small octavo original gilt-stamped blue-green cloth. Housed in a custom half teal buffalo skin and gold brocade clamshell box. $14000.First edition in English of Flaubert's literary masterpiece translated by Karl Marx's daughter Eleanor Marx-Aveling.Upon publication of Madame Bovary both Flaubert and his publisher were arrested on charges of immorality and narrowly escaped conviction. Although the work was purportedly based in part on the life of Flaubert's friend Louise Pradier the author's claim that ""Madame Bovary is myself"" with his unrelenting objectivity and deep compassion for his characters earned him his reputation as the great master of the Realist school of French literature. ""Novelists should thank Gustave Flaubert the way poets thank spring: it begins again with him. He is the originator of the modern novelÉ He began writing Madame Bovary in September 1851 and delivered the manuscript in 1856 when he was 35É No novelist agonized as much or as publiclyÉ And no novelist reflected as self-consciously on questions of techniqueÉ Thus 'style' was born"" New York Times Book Review. First published in French in 1857. With frontispiece five full-page illustrations and ornamental head- and tailpieces. Mahaffey 156. Minor foxing to text block edges otherwise bright and beautiful. A very nearly fine copy. hardcover

1930réf. 34353New York: The Brown House 1930. First Edition with these illustrations and one of 800 copies only. Illustrated throughout with full-page plates and line drawings to the borders of nearly every page by Alexander King. Large Quarto bound in publisher's original brown calf the spine decoratively lettered in silver in an all over design all edges gilt housed in the original slipcase. vi 348 2 pp. a handsome and pleasing copy in very well preserved condition the binding in very good order with just a touch of rubbing to the tip of the spine the book tight and strong the text and illustrations all in fine condition the slipcase with some wear. POWERFUL ILLUSTRATIONS THROUGHOUT. Flaubert's second novel and the first to be translated into English. After the First Punic War Carthage is unable to fulfill promises made to its army of mercenaries and finds itself under attack. The fictional title character a priestess and the daughter of Hamilcar Barca an aristocratic Carthaginian general is the object of the obsessive lust of Matho a leader of the mercenaries. The book which Flaubert researched painstakingly is largely an exercise in sensuous and violent exoticism. Following the success of Madame Bovary it was another best-seller and sealed his reputation. The Carthaginian costumes described therein even left traces on the fashions of the time. The Brown House unknown
