His many publications include books on Otto Wagner R. M. Schindler Lois Welzenbacher Ernst Lichtblau Adolf Loos and E. A. Plischke. Otto Koloman Wagner 13 July 1841 - 11 April 1918 was an Austrian architect furniture designer and urban planner. In 1862 at the age of 22 he joined the architectural firm of Ludwig von Förster whose studio had designed much of the new architecture along the Ringstrasse. He began to develop his own philosophy of architecture based on the need for buildings to be above all functional. He was a leading member of the Vienna Secession movement of architecture founded in 1897 and the broader Art Nouveau movement. Many of his works are found in his native city of Vienna and illustrate the rapid evolution of architecture during the period. His early works were inspired by classical architecture. By mid-1890s he had already designed several buildings in what became known as the Vienna Secession style. Beginning in 1898 with his designs of Vienna Metro stations his style became floral and Art Nouveau with decoration by Koloman Moser. His later works 1906 until his death in 1918 had geometric forms and minimal ornament clearly expressing their function. They are considered predecessors to modern architecture. The pioneer of Viennese Modernism One of Austria's most influential architects Otto Wagner 1841-1918 played a key role in modernizing urban architecture. Forming an approach described as structural rationalism Wagner pioneered use of materials such as glass steel and especially aluminum. He was associated with the Viennese Succession a group of artists and designers headed by Gustav Kllmt that initiated a departure from the conservative style of the Viennese Kunstlerhaus. Among Wagner's most important buildings are the Vienna Postsparkassenamt Postal Savings building and the Steinhof Church. In the 1890s Wagner became increasingly interested in urban planning. Vienna was growing rapidly; it reached a population of 1590000 residents in 1898. In 1890 the city government decided expand the urban transit system outwards to the new neighborhoods. In April 1894 Wagner was named artistic counselor for the new Stadtbahn and gradually was given responsibility for the design of the bridges viaducts and stations including the elevators signs lighting and decoration. Wagner hired seventy artists and designers for his transit stations including two young designers who later became very prominent in the birth of modern architecture Joseph Maria Olbrich and Josef Hoffmann. The government committee in charge of the project specified that the buildings should be covered in white plaster for uniformity and that the style should be Renaissance also for uniformity. Working within these requirements Wagner designed stations and other structures which combined utility simplicity and elegance. Taschen paperback

1961ref. 33Description taken from dust jacket: In the beginning Mann wanted simply to tell the story of how he came to write a Faust novel and how under the influence of contemplation and reading and "the pressure and tumult of outer events" it became the celebrated book we know. But as so often hammered with Mann the book he wrote was quite different from the book he planned and in the end The Story of a Novel became no less than an account of the challenge the delights and the torments of the creative process itself— a unique answer to the question readers of masterpieces have never tried of asking "How did he do it" Manny ells the absorbing story of the long period of incubation of Doctor Faustus and its sudden ripening under the impact of world events. He recalls his many hours of self-doubt and the trials that his self-criticism imposed upon him at every stage. And throughout there are intimate descriptions of his life in wartime California of the circle of "men of understanding and good will" with whom he was surrounded of the cast reading the did and the music he heard and of his day-by-day exposure to news from the fronts and news especially from his native land whose guilt and misery came to form an obbligato to his novel. About two thirds of the way through Mann underwent serious chest surgery in a Chicago hospital. He came out of this ordeal astonishingly well and he writes with fascinating detail and indeed humorous charm of his experiences with medical men surgeons and nurses. This "story of a novel" is therefore something very special— the nearest thing to an autobiography of Mann's later years that we can hope for. It will interest all his admirers everyone who is anxious to observe what Baudelaire called the "mind's heavenly mechanics" and anyone who is simply curious about a great man. Book is in good condition. Stains noticeable on end papers and in some spots on dust jacket. Small tear on inner front of jacket. Slight wear at the top of dust jacket and creasing on jacket. 2024ref. BIBHB0334003262024. Hardcover. New. About The Book: This work delves into the ideological and structural factors that underpin gender inequality largely within the patriarchal societies of Asia such as India Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. It shows how all forms of discrimination against women are justified through cultural religious and other social values that deny womens opportunity to occupy positions of power within society politics decision-making organisations and even economic upper management. It also gives great importance to the vectors of gendered culture and the need to address those issues essential for womens emancipation. The other discussed theme concerns the need for womens political participation for equality development and peace and democracy. The text also highlights the importance of womens participation in decision-making processes so that the current society will be more representative. It also speaks about demands for womens liberation for them to be able to assume the responsibility of changes in their lives and claiming rights from the state and the society. Besides it addresses the challenges women face in attaining leadership roles despite gains in literacy and educational attainment pointing towards the persistence of gender disparities in positions of power.
