ref. 7426New York. 1937. Knopf. 1st American Edition. Previous Owner's Inscription in Front Otherwise Very Goos in Slightly Worn Dustjacket. Translated from the German by H. T. Lowe-Porter & Rita Matthias-Reil. 211 pages. hardcover. keywords: Europe Germany Literature Translated World Literature. DESCRIPTION - The three lectures in this volume were given as part of the program celebrating the fourth anniversary of the University in Exile. They attracted nation-wide attention and each was attended by a large and enthusiastic audience. In them the greatest living man of letters illuminates the work of three of the greatest minds of modern civilization and at the same time sets forth his own social and aesthetic beliefs. They are rich and stimulating reading and indispensable to an understanding of Thomas Mann himself. They should be of interest both to those who were unable to attend the lectures and to those who were able to do so but want them in permanent form. The three essays in this volume were delivered by Thomas Mann in somewhat abridged form as lectures at the New School for Social Research in New York City in 1937 those on Freud and Wagner on April 19 in German that on Goethe on April 22 in English. Their earlier history is as follows: Goethe's Career as a Man of Letters' Goethes Laufbahn als Schriftsteller' was delivered as an address in the Stadthalle at Weimar March 21 1932 and was subsequently published in the volume of essays entitled Leiden und Grosse der Meister Berlin: S. Fischer Verlag; 1935. The Sufferings and Greatness of Richard Wagner' Leiden und Grosse Richard Wagners' was written for the fiftieth anniversary of Wagner's death and was delivered on February 10 1933 at the University of Munich. It was published in the April 1933 number of Neue Rundschau and was also included in Leiden und Grosse der Meister. In English translation it appeared in PAST MASTERS AND OTHER PAPERS New York: Alfred A. Knopf; 1933. Freud and the Future' was first delivered at a celebration in honour of the eightieth birthday of Freud in Vienna on May 8 1936. It was published separately as Freud und die Zukunft by Berman-Fischer Vienna 1936. The translation of Freud and the Future' and The Sufferings and Greatness of Richard Wagner' is by H. T. Lowe-Porter; that of Goethe's Career as a Man of Letters' based on a draft by Marie Hottinger Mackie is by Rita Matthias-Reil who has also helped to see this volume through the press. inventory #7426 hardcover
ref. 34500New York. 1959. Knopf. 1st American Edition. Very Good in Dustjacket. Translated from the German by Richard & Clara Winston and Tania & James Stern. 218 pages. hardcover. Jacket photograph by Alfred A. Knopf. keywords: Europe Germany Literature Translated Essays World Literature. DESCRIPTION - This book contains Thomas Mann's last great performances as a man of letters. They have been superbly translated. On Schiller' the longest of the pieces assembled in this volume has been called the most eloquent and moving of Mann's essays. In this commemorative address Thomas Mann returned as an old man to a figure who had fascinated him when he was very young. Drawing on his own experiences in the sufferings and joys of creative living he arrived at a new and often startling picture of the great poet. Schiller's problematic friendship with Goethe grows in Mann's narrative to be the very key to an understanding of his life and writings. Fantasy on Goethe' represents the last ripest fruit of Mann's lifelong preoccupation with his towering countryman. The almost novelistic flow of this essay produces an intimacy with Goethe that only the author of THE BELOVED RETURNS could create. In Chekhov' Mann retraces with compassionate warmth the short life of one of the few writers who influenced his own early efforts as a teller of tales. Nietzsche's Philosophy in the Light of Recent History' as powerful as it is subtle will come as a surprise to most readers. It constitutes a reappraisal of the philosopher's work which for better and for worse overshadowed the thinking of Mann's whole generation. This essay is in effect Mann's farewell to one of the heroes of his youth and early manhood-a deeply moving testimonial to Thomas Mann's never-ceasing search for truth. inventory #34500 hardcover
