Mai 1949 in Cannes Frankreich war ein deutsch-amerikanischer Schriftsteller. Der älteste Sohn von Thomas Mann begann seine literarische Laufbahn in der Zeit der Weimarer Republik als Außenseiter da er in seinem frühen Werk Themen verarbeitete die zur damaligen Zeit als Tabubruch galten. Nach seiner Emigration aus Deutschland im Jahr 1933 aufgrund der NS-Machtübernahme folgte eine wesentliche Neuorientierung in der Thematik seiner Werke: Klaus Mann wurde zum kämpferischen Literaten gegen den Nationalsozialismus. Als Exilant nahm er 1943 die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft an. Die Neuentdeckung des Werkes von Klaus Mann in Deutschland fand erst viele Jahre nach seinem Tod statt. Er gilt heute als einer der wichtigsten Repräsentanten der deutschsprachigen Exilliteratur nach 1933. . 1942 erschien seine zweite Autobiografie The Turning Point dt. Der Wendepunkt die er auf Englisch schrieb und später für eine deutsche Ausgabe übersetzte. Das deutsche Manuskript hat Klaus Mann kurz vor seinem Tod im April 1949 noch abschließen können. Die Autobiografie Der Wendepunkt ist jedoch nach eigenen Angaben in der Nachbemerkung der deutschen Ausgabe nicht identisch mit der amerikanischen Ausgabe; Der Wendepunkt ist umfangreicher und endet mit einem Brief vom 28. September 1945 während The Turning Point mit einer Tagebuchnotiz aus dem Juni 1942 abschließt. Einige Details aus der amerikanischen Ausgabe sind im Wendepunkt nicht enthalten die für den deutschen Leser nach Einschätzung des Autors entbehrlich waren."
