Buergin 568. In the summer of 1942 the Austrian refugee and music publisher Armin L. Robinson invited ten prestigious writers to work on a new project: an anti-fascist propaganda film that would demonstrate that Nazi ideology violated each of the Ten Commandments. The deal with Metro-Goldwyn-Meyer fell through so Robinson decided to continue the project as a collection of ten novellas. Each writer took one amendment with Thomas Mann leading the charge: 1. Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thomas Mann. 2. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image. Rebecca West. 3. Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain. Franz Werfel. 4. Remember to keep the sabbath day to keep it holy. John Erskine. 5. Honour thy father and thy mother. Bruno Frank. 6. Thou shalt not kill. Jules Romains. 7. Thou shalt not commit adultery. Andre Maurois. 8. Thou shalt not steal. Sigrid Undset. 9. Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor. Hendrik Willem Van Loon. 10. Thou shalt not covet. Louis Bromfeld. The book was published in December 1943. Reviewers felt that the collection was uneven and overly long but still found much to praise particularly in Mann's contribution. They all felt the moral imperative of anti-Nazi writing: "Here the world's pen is raised against the sword of the super-race" wrote the New York Times. Four years into the war it had become clear that Hitler's conquest of Europe went well beyond territorial expansion and was an assault on civilization itself. It is no surprise that Eleanor Roosevelt should own a copy of this limited edition the text of which is taken from the third trade printing. Apart from being married to Hitler's chief opponent Eleanor was an activist whose positive newspaper review of Mann's 1938 book The Coming Victory of Democracy had aided its success with the American public. The Roosevelts received Thomas Mann and his wife at the White House in 1941 and Mann who admired the President's values and speechmaking gave a speech on behalf of his reelection campaign in 1944. This copy of The Ten Commandments bound for the First Lady's personal library is a tribute to the shared principles of those towering figures. Simon and Schuster unknown books

1912Best.-Nr. 2495Berlin: S. Fischer Verlag 1912. First edition. Original wrappers. Very Good. FIRST PRINTING IN EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS of arguably Thomas Mann's most celebrated work. "At the beginning of 1911 Mann's health was poor and his development sluggish. Nothing he had published since Buddenbrooks had been received with such universal acclaim. He had planned but abandoned several long works and had published chiefly short stories. Convinced that he needed to make a mark with a new piece that would appeal to current tastes he poured all his mastery into Death in Venice . The story was written between July 1911 and July 1912 . Mann had intended it for S. Fischer's magazine by that time merely called Die Neue Rundschau but was uncharacteristically hesitant about submitting it once it was done-it was too innovative and personal. His wife convinced him to send it in. It was first published in the October and November 1912 issues" S. Appelbaum. The publication in the October and November issues of Die Neue Rundschau preceded the rare limited edition printed by Hans von Weber. 1934Best.-Nr. 2522New York: n.p. 1934. Very Good. POWERFUL STEICHEN PORTRAIT OF THOMAS MANN FROM CHANCE MEETING IN NEW YORK. Edward Steichen was one of the early pioneers of photographic art leading the movement of photography from its established position as a utilitarian medium to a mode of creative expression. As a major contributor to Alfred Stieglitz's Camera Work magazine in the first decades of the twentieth century Steichen had cemented his reputation as a new kind of photographer enjoying both artistic and commercial success-working as chief photographer for Condé Nast and later heading the Met's photography department. In 1959 having completed the first decade in his tenure as director of the Museum of Modern Art's photography division Steichen was approached by Tas Toth about curating a new display to serve as a counterpart to Steichen's astronomically successful The Family of Man-a MoMA exhibition that would become and remains to-date the most-viewed photographic exhibition. Toth's exhibition to be called Das menschliche Antlitz Europas The Human Face of Europe would mirror The Family of Man's thematic emphasis on shared humanity principally by showcasing images by distinguished figures including Cartier-Bresson Boubat Brassai and Doisneau alongside works by lesser-known artists. Initially the renowned artists were hesitant to contribute towards this unique concept and it was only after Steichen endorsed Toth by allowing him to exhibit his portrait of Thomas Mann that a large number of eminent photographers agreed to contribute to the group exhibition. Steichen's impactful photograph is the work present here. Steichen had taken the image in the United States where Mann would emigrate in 1939 to avoid mounting persecution in his native Germany and where Mann would remain until 1952. It was in 1934 that Mann to promote his Jospeh series made his first journey to America- embarking on RMS Volendam and arriving in New York to great fanfare-"scarcely dreaming" writes biographer Nigel Hamilton "he would one day become an American citizen" p. 283. The image of Mann follows in a line of portraits by Steichen of leading world figures from Churchill and FDR to Chaplin and Gershwin. Furthermore the present photograph preserves in addition to Mann's likeness the providential meeting of two of the most impactful twentieth century creatives who would both make their homes in the New World. Provenance: -Donated by Steichen to the original owner when he worked on the organization of the exhibition 'Das Menschliche Antlitz Europas'. -Christie's lot 218 Sale 7415 21 Nov. 1996 Exhibited: 'Das Menschliche Antlitz Europas' Municipal Museum of Munich 1959. Cameron Mann 1851 - 1932 was an author Episcopal priest the Third Bishop of North Dakota and the First Bishop of South Florida. The Theta Delta Chi Society was founded as a social fraternity in 1847 at Union College New York. Byy the last quarter of the 19th century the society spread rapidly adding charges a term used by TDX brothers to refer to their local organizations rather than the more-commonly used "chapters" throughout the entire country including Stanford Berkeley Brown Tufts UVA Dartmouth Yale etc. The historical poem related to the Civil War was written and delivered by Mann at the closing of the 27th Annual Convention of Theta Delta Chi at a grand banquet at Delmonico's in New York. The illustrations designed by Franklin Burdge combined typography and beautiful unique wood-engraved illustrations to represent the Greek letters by which the charge was known. According to a "Notice to Graduates" at the end of the booklet the engravings were included "partly in order that by an inspection of the wood cuts inserted they may judge of the character of the new Catalog of the Society and have their attention called to the fact that more subscriptions are needed to print it."
