"A modest but astonishing book on the graffiti culture of East LA in the early 1970s was my most exciting discovery in the preparation of "Art in the Streets" the exhibition that Roger Gastman Aaron Rose and I curated for the Museum of Contemporary Art Los Angeles in 2011. Nearly forty years after it was made Gusmano Cesaretti's work remains fresh and revelatory. Looking at his images we are still entering a secret world. Gusmano's special rapport with his subjects that allowed him such direct access also remains after the passage of four decades. Alleged Press / Damiani hardcover

1934réf. 37613Karlsbad: Verlagsanstalt "Graphia 1934. First edition. Paperback. fair to g. Quarto. 76 4pp. Original printed wrappers. Set up on March 21 1933 the Oranienburg concentration camp was an early concentration camp and one of the first detention facilities established by the Nazis when they gained power in 1933. It held the Nazis' political opponents from the Berlin region mostly members of the Communist Party of Germany and social-democrats as well as a number of homosexual men. It was established in the center of the town of Oranienburg when the SA took over a disused factory possibly a brewery. Prisoners were marched through the town to perform forced labor on behalf of the local council. The prison was taken over by the SS on 4 July 1934 when the SA was suppressed by the regime. It was closed and subsequently replaced in the area by Sachsenhausen concentration camp in 1936. Gerhart Seger a Social Democrat who was able to escape at the end of 1933 reported on the situation in this book and thus contributed to the Oranienburg Concentration Camp becoming a worldwide symbol of Nazi terror. B/w photographic frontispiece portrait of Jacob Mann in each volume. This first edition of "The Collected Articles" sheds a valuable light on the writings of Jacob Mann 1888-1940 an accomplished and distinguished scholar of the Genizah period and of the Jews under the Fatimids and particularly of the Genizah fragments. Mann for the first time undertook to collect and explain all the documents from the period preceding the Crusades to the fall of the Fatimids. By establishing the dates of a great number of the largely undated Genizah documents Mann provided the chronological framework for the history of the Jews in the Near East. He revealed the great role played by the Jerusalem gaonate in the period before the Crusades and shed new light on the various forces within the Jewish communities then living in the lands ruled by the Fatimids. Although Mann neglected the Arabic documents abstained avowedly from drawing general conclusions and was mainly interested in the communal history of the Jews his work is of lasting value as a great collection of hitherto unknown sources which he ably deciphered and annotated.
