1850réf. 319728Washington DC: Gideon and Co 1850. 1st Edition. Disbound. Fair. 15p. DISBOUND. Text of a speech removed from a larger volume with fragments of binding thread still in the spine fold. Edges heavily worn top left corner torn not affecting text itself. Corners crumpled horizintal creases in pamphlet as a whole and pages foxed. Text unmarked except for a faint notation on the title page. Much-worn but readable and complete. Though best remembered as an education reformer and staunch advocate for public schools Horace Mann 1796-1859 was also a vocal abolitionist. In this speech Mann argues against the extension of slavery into the western territories as well as the obligation of free states to return escaped slaves to their masters. The Compromise of 1850 which included the controversial Fugitive Slave Act would be passed into law only 7 months after Mann delivered this speech. Gideon and Co unknown

Synopsis: "Thomas Mann's last great novel first published in 1947… is a modern reworking of the Faust legend in which Germany sells its soul to the Devil. Mann's protagonist the composer Adrian Leverkhn is the flower of German culture a brilliant isolated overreaching figure his radical new music a breakneck game played by art at the very edge of impossibility… Leverkhn's life story is a brilliant allegory of the rise of the Third Reich of Germany's renunciation of its own humanity and its embrace of ambition and nihilism. It is also Mann's most profound meditation on the German genius – both national and individual – and the terrible responsibilities of the truly great artist."…… Doctor Faustus is arguably one of the most significant novels of the twentieth century in any language. Acclaimed as a masterpiece at the time of its original publication Doctor Faustus has been the subject of hundreds of scholarly articles and books. Insurance & handling is included free. Signed by Norm Ornstein on the title page. Thomas E. Mann born September 10 1944 is the W. Averell Harriman Chair and a senior fellow in Governance Studies at the Brookings Institution a non-partisan think tank based in Washington D.C. He primarily studies and speaks on elections in the United States campaign finance reform Senate and filibuster reform Congress redistricting and political polarization. Norman Jay Ornstein born October 14 1948 is an American political scientist and an emeritus scholar at the American Enterprise Institute AEI a Washington D.C. conservative think tank. He is the co-author along with Thomas E. Mann of It's Even Worse Than It Looks: How the American Constitutional System Collided With the New Politics of Extremism. Foreign Policy named Ornstein along with Thomas E. Mann one of its 2012 Top 100 Global Thinkers "for diagnosing America's political dysfunction". Acrimony and hyperpartisanship have seeped into every part of the political process. Congress is deadlocked and its approval ratings are at record lows. America’s two main political parties have given up their traditions of compromise endangering our very system of constitutional democracy. And one of these parties has taken on the role of insurgent outlier; the Republicans have become ideologically extreme scornful of compromise and ardently opposed to the established social and economic policy regime. In It’s Even Worse Than It Looks congressional scholars Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein identify two overriding problems that have led Congress—and the United States—to the brink of institutional collapse. The first is the serious mismatch between our political parties which have become as vehemently adversarial as parliamentary parties and a governing system that unlike a parliamentary democracy makes it extremely difficult for majorities to act. Second while both parties participate in tribal warfare both sides are not equally culpable. The political system faces what the authors call “asymmetric polarization” with the Republican Party implacably refusing to allow anything that might help the Democrats politically no matter the cost. With dysfunction rooted in long-term political trends a coarsened political culture and a new partisan media the authors conclude that there is no “silver bullet” reform that can solve everything. But they offer a panoply of useful ideas and reforms endorsing some solutions like greater public participation and institutional restructuring of the House and Senate while debunking others like independent or third-party candidates. Above all they call on the media as well as the public at large to focus on the true causes of dysfunction rather than just throwing the bums out every election cycle. Until voters learn to act strategically to reward problem solving and punish obstruction American democracy will remain in serious danger. Derived from a Kirkus review: Two scholars examine how today’s hyperpartisanship has crippled our government. In a country famous for its rough-and-tumble politics are things really worse than they’ve ever been Yes wrote Brookings Institution senior fellow Mann and American Enterprise Institute resident scholar Ornstein. To explain the dynamics of the institutional dysfunction plaguing Congress they begin with a chronicle of the 2011 fight over the debt limit. They trace the governmental breakdown to two sources: 1 the mismatch between our separation-of-powers government and an increasingly parliamentary-style of party politics that features rigid ideologies a prioritizing of political strategies over national welfare and an unwillingness to compromise; and 2 the asymmetric nature of the polarization—i.e. a wildly out-of-the-mainstream Republican Party. The authors offer their own proposals for fixing the parties and reforming our governmental institutions most very lofty—few likely to be adopted. They reject the notion that we’re merely passing through an unfortunate phase and insist that we’re at an unprecedented impasse. They go on to criticize the mainstream media for its false sense of equivalence. The authors who’ve collaborated before style themselves as straight shooters nonpartisan analysts who’ve worked for decades in Washington with members of both parties. Basic Books hardcover
2020réf. 88516New York: Henry Holt and Company 2020. First Edition Stated First Printing Stated. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. Mark Wilson Jacket photograph and Caroline E. De. xii 416 4 pages. Notes. Index. Inscribed by the author on the title page. The inscription reads: "To Gary an old friend over the years. J Mann 1/25/20". Dick Cheney and Colin Powell--it is easy to forget that they were once allies. The two men collaborated closely in the successful American wars in Panama and Iraq during the presidency of George H. W. Bush. However conflicts of ideology and sensibility drove them apart. Under George W. Bush they fell into ever-deepening antagonism over the role America should play in a world marked by terrorism and other nontraditional threats. In a wide-ranging deeply researched and dramatic narrative James Mann explores each man's biography and philosophical predispositions to show how and why this deep and permanent rupture occurred. He brings to life the very human story of how this influential friendship turned so sour and how the enmity of these two powerful men colored the way America acts in the world. James Mann born 1946 is a journalist and author. As a newspaper journalist he worked for more than two decades for the Los Angeles Times where he served as Supreme Court correspondent Beijing bureau chief and foreign-policy columnist. Earlier in his career he worked at The Washington Post where he was part of the newspaper's Watergate coverage. His magazine articles have appeared in The New Republic The Atlantic Monthly and The American Lawyer. His 1992 article "Who Was Deep Throat" was included in The Atlantic Monthly's collection "The American Idea: The Best of The Atlantic Monthly. Derived from a Kirkus review: A useful review of the hard-right shift of U.S. foreign policy since the end of the Cold War delivered via a comparative study of two of the seminal players. As Mann shows in this illuminating dual biography and history lesson early on in their careers Colin Powell and Dick Cheney both hitched their stars to top government insiders who helped propel them to the highest levels of power. Powell the amiable popular soldier was an aide to both Frank Carlucci and Casper Weinberger at the Defense Department and National Security Council—before becoming national security adviser in 1987. Cheney became Donald Rumsfeld's aide during Gerald Ford's brief administration before assuming the role of White House chief of staff. Both men achieved stellar appointments during George H.W. Bush's administration and led a "good war" that expelled Iraq from Kuwait while agreeing not to extend the war into Baghdad. Yet it was in George W. Bush's administration that the two—Cheney as VP Powell as secretary of state—began to diverge in thinking and action. Cheney's "blueprint" was essentially to keep the U.S. as the world's dominant military superpower after the collapse of the Soviet Union and actively "block" any hostile rival. Powell maintained a centrist position and urged caution and restraint especially regarding another war with Iraq. Cheney pushed for aggressive "antiterrorist measures" including the controversial and ultimately self-defeating "black sites" and "enhanced interrogation" measures while Powell emphasized working with U.S. allies. Both men would develop their own "tribes" of followers. Yet it was Powell who became the poster child for the invasion of Iraq convinced by U.S. intelligence into making a false casus belli of Iraq's possession of weapons of mass destruction. The friendship was over and the split caused deep rifts in the country at large. Still as Mann demonstrates thoroughly in his insightful dissection of their relationship Powell was as complicit and eager a participant in the nation's disastrous ventures as Cheney. In this eloquent work that encompasses both patriotism and inner conflict; Mann weaves together the many threads of history and culture that underlay his nature and philosophy. The book reflects as well the conflict between Thomas Mann defender of the German character and the German empire and his writer-brother Heinrich who hoped for Germany's defeat so that her stubborn conservative spirit givesway to an enlightened democracy. The Real War thus became a fraternal struggle and its echoes are heard in these pages. Paul Thomas Mann 6 June 1875 - 12 August 1955 was a German novelist short story writer social critic philanthropist essayist and the 1929 Nobel Prize in Literature laureate. His highly symbolic and ironic epic novels and novellas are noted for their insight into the psychology of the artist and the intellectual. His analysis and critique of the European and German soul used modernized versions of German and Biblical stories as well as the ideas of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe Friedrich Nietzsche and Arthur Schopenhauer. Mann was a member of the Hanseatic Mann family and portrayed his family and class in his first novel Buddenbrooks. His older brother was the radical writer Heinrich Mann and three of Mann's six children Erika Mann Klaus Mann and Golo Mann also became significant German writers. When Adolf Hitler came to power in 1933 Mann fled to Switzerland. When World War II broke out in 1939 he moved to the United States then returned to Switzerland in 1952. Mann is one of the best-known exponents of the so-called Exilliteratur German literature written in exile by those who opposed the Hitler regime. His career as a writer began when he wrote for the magazine Simplicissimus. Mann's first short story "Little Mr. Friedemann" Der Kleine Herr Friedemann was published in 1898. On 23 June 1944 Thomas Mann was naturalized as a citizen of the United States. From a review found on-line: When the Great War broke out in August 1914 Thomas Mann like so many people on both sides of the conflict was exhilarated. Finally the era of decadence that he had anatomized in Death in Venice had come to an end; finally there was a cause worth fighting and even dying for or at least when it came to Mann himself writing about. Mann immediately picked up his pen to compose a paean to the German cause. Soon after his elder brother and lifelong rival the novelist Heinrich Mann responded with a no less determined denunciation. Thomas took it as an unforgivable stab in the back. The bitter dispute between the brothers would swell into the strange tortured brilliant sometimes perverse literary performance that is Reflections of a Nonpolitical Man a book that Mann worked on and added to throughout the war and that bears an intimate relation to his postwar masterpiece The Magic Mountain. Wild and ungainly though Mann's reflections can be they nonetheless constitute a key meditation on the freedom of the artist and the distance between literature and politics. Heraldry is a broad term encompassing the design display and study of armorial bearings known as armory as well as related disciplines such as vexillology together with the study of ceremony rank and pedigree. Armory the best-known branch of heraldry concerns the design and transmission of the heraldic achievement. The achievement or armorial bearings usually includes a coat of arms on a shield helmet and crest together with any accompanying devices such as supporters badges heraldic banners and mottoes. The concept of regular hereditary designs constituting the distinguishing feature of heraldry did not develop until the High Middle Ages. It is very often claimed that the use of helmets with face guards during this period made it difficult to recognize one's commanders in the field when large armies gathered for extended periods necessitating the development of heraldry as a symbolic language. In modern times individuals organizations corporations cities and regions use heraldry and its conventions to symbolize their heritage achievements and aspirations. This book contains the most complete collection of insignia of any branch in the armed forces--that of the U.S. Army Air Forces. According to the author overall insignia of the AAF are the nearest approximations of the consensus of feeling attitude and pride of fighting men in the ranks from pole to pole. Robert M. It aims to be a management tool for building quality into products in order to increase productivity and attain a more favorable competitive position. The book explains how the Deming philosophy evolved and how the West exposed to it in it's embryonic form during World War II failed to recognize as Japan did its importance for economic development. It shows how the Japanese implemented the philosophy and how their success has influenced companies in the West to adopt it as a working principle. Prestwick Books hardcover
