Sheet Music. a decent clean copy but reinforced with brown paper tape along the spine and the right edge of the front cover. Music and lyrics for a cringeingly racist ditty about "A Coonlet Courtship" with a cover illustration matching the first lyric line: "Two little piccaninnies sitting on a stile" with a handy watermelon at their feet. And of course the front cover proclaims that the song was "sung & illustrated with great success by Maxwell & Simpson" a couple of white guys. I wonder which one of them depicted the little girl The rear cover lists about two dozen additional "Coon Songs" available from the publishers including one by Bert Williams "that are all the rage in the rage of coon songs." First edition of this historical political and economic examination of socialism; from the library of writer and social reformer Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Octavo original brown cloth. Signed and dated by Gilman in pencil on the front free endpaper "Charlotte P. Gilman 1911." Gilman was an American humanist novelist writer lecturer advocate and eugenicist who served as a role model for future generations of utopian feminists. Best known for her semi-autobiographical short story 'The Yellow Wallpaper' which she wrote after a severe bout of postpartum psychosis Gilman has written works on gender and male domination that continue to maintain their relevance in today's society. In good condition with some rubbing to the spine extremities front and rear panel a small loss to the crown of the spine and light toning to the front and rear pastedown front and rear free endpaper. After serving in the Western Sanitary Commission of the military during the Civil War Newton Mann entered the Unitarian ministry and organized the Unitarian Church in Kenosha Wisconsin. Drawing a path through religion at a time when evolution was being discussed in church Mann was soon publishing books such as 'Evolution of a Great Literature' one of the best books setting higher criticism of the Bible into motion.
