First edition of this important account of the emigration of "those creative artists and thinkers for whom existence under the swastika became intolerable" cover. Mann - who at various points worked as a travel writer war reporter radio broadcaster cabaret owner actress and literary executor for her father - was forced to flee Germany in 1933 herself and later gained British citizenship by way of a marriage of convenience with poet W.H. Auden. While BARBARIANS focused on German fascist propaganda and education ESCAPE details those writers scholars scientists intellectuals and artists who fled Germany beginning in 1933 to escape the censorship and oppression of the Nazi regime. Increasingly uncommon in the first edition especially so in jacket. 8.5'' x 5.5''. Original full red cloth stamped in blue and gold. In original price-clipped pictorial jacket. 384 pages. Jacket rubbed and edgeworn with some creasing and like soil. Book has touches of shelfwear at extremities. Else clean and sound. Houghton Mifflin Company unknown
