The Song of Prince Igor is the text of a court epic song dating from the 12th century although it was most likely written down early in the 13th century. It depicts the failed campaign of Prince Igor Sviatoslavich against an eastern tribe known as the Polovtsy. Robert Mann's line-by-line commentary incorporates discoveries that he has made between 1975 and 2010 including wedding song parallels showing that much of the military campaign is portrayed metaphorically as a wedding celebration. The wedding metaphors together with a 15th-century text that Mann has recently brought to scholars' attention help to prove the authenticity of the Igor Tale which a number of historians have questioned. Although it is shorter than other ancient epics such as The Odyssey and Song of Roland the Song of Prince Igor is exceptional for its rich colorful metaphors and for the dynamic pace of its narrative.
