Best.-Nr. 46059Portsmouth/London. 1991. Heinemann/James Currey. 1st Edition. Very Good in Wrappers. 0435080555. 264 pages. paperback. keywords: Africa Law History. DESCRIPTION - Law is about power to command and to shape social relations and social action but it is equally about challenges to authority. Studying law yields fresh insights into the meaning of colonialism to those who were empowered by it and those who struggle against it. Law in Colonial Africa was a cultural project which lay at the heart of efforts by Europeans and Africans to channel social change. The contributors in this volume use different approaches and employ different sources to investigate the interaction between law and social history. This book simultaneously casts new light on the colonial experience of Africans and Europeans assesses the research potential of untried sources and methods and charts the intellectual agenda for further historical and anthropological studies of law. The scholars represented in Law in Colonial Africa understand law as a dynamic historical formation which at once shapes and is shaped by economic political and social processes. Drawing on recent research of anthropology history and critical legal studies they conceive of law not as an impartial arbiter guided by fixed rules and procedures but as a human construct invoked by some at the expense of others in struggles over resources power and authority. Studying law in colonial Africa illuminates who won and who lost in struggles over resources and over authority and how and why. It also uncovers the terms of the debates over what custom was or should be. By tying these two problems the research presented here advances understanding of the relationship among the making of law society and culture in colonial Africa. inventory #46059 paperback

Jacket photograph by Alfred A. Knopf. keywords: Europe Germany Literature Translated Essays World Literature. DESCRIPTION - This book contains Thomas Mann's last great performances as a man of letters. They have been superbly translated. On Schiller' the longest of the pieces assembled in this volume has been called the most eloquent and moving of Mann's essays. In this commemorative address Thomas Mann returned as an old man to a figure who had fascinated him when he was very young. Drawing on his own experiences in the sufferings and joys of creative living he arrived at a new and often startling picture of the great poet. Schiller's problematic friendship with Goethe grows in Mann's narrative to be the very key to an understanding of his life and writings. Fantasy on Goethe' represents the last ripest fruit of Mann's lifelong preoccupation with his towering countryman. The almost novelistic flow of this essay produces an intimacy with Goethe that only the author of THE BELOVED RETURNS could create. In Chekhov' Mann retraces with compassionate warmth the short life of one of the few writers who influenced his own early efforts as a teller of tales. Nietzsche's Philosophy in the Light of Recent History' as powerful as it is subtle will come as a surprise to most readers. It constitutes a reappraisal of the philosopher's work which for better and for worse overshadowed the thinking of Mann's whole generation. This essay is in effect Mann's farewell to one of the heroes of his youth and early manhood-a deeply moving testimonial to Thomas Mann's never-ceasing search for truth. inventory #34500 hardcover

Synopsis: Maybe not the largest maybe not the most secret but damn near the most exciting -- at least as recollected by real-life Ruth Kluger whose operations with the Mossad in World War II make Exodus seem like kid stuff. That was a group of ten top-secret individuals nine men and a woman who tried to smuggle Jews out of Europe into Palestine as Hitler was making his final decision between deportation and incineration -- and every country in the world with the exception of Shanghai "regretfully" barred its doors to six million future corpses. Unbelievable obstacles -- finding ship owners willing to lease even moribund vessels at premium in wartime to an organization disowned even in its own non-country; cajoling sailors into tiding the leaky boats; calming down passengers confined to a few feet of a darkened airless hold for sometimes weeks on end; endless baksheesh bribes to border officials stationmasters harbormasters embassies for phony transit or entry visas; evading British ships and border patrols which sent illegal immigrants only 10000 legal per year back to where they came or at best to some Palestinian prison; and finally money money money from rich Jews unwilling to believe their civilized world was collapsing all around them. This is truly a tragic heroic tale of individuals who sacrificed their private selves and often their lives for their fellow man -- a story no one Jews gypsies or the great untouched should ever forget. Insurance & handling is included free. Extra Charges/Fees apply on Shipments Outside The U.S. and Expedited Shipments. Oversize and/or heavy books may require additional fees. Will advise.
