"Exploits--not too credible--of Deborah Sampson in the Revolution; that she actually served under the name of Robert Shurtleff is however a matter of indisputable record"--Howes. Deborah Sampson 1760-1827 and her adventures masquerading as a male soldier during the American Revolution under the name Robert Shurtleff. Sampson has become an important figure in discussions of early American sexuality and gender presentation. In spite of the clear popularity of this text - the present edition was subscribed to by many neighbors in eastern Massachusetts and the. unknown
