Summary Shortly after the death of Egypt's most famous hermit in 356 Athanasius of Alexandria wrote the Life of Antony a text that had an immediate as well as enduring influence on monastic life and thought. While Athanasius's vivid description of the life of Antony the Great initiated the genre of the saint's life in Christian literature his inclusion of many of his own theological ideas also provides insight into the turbulent doctrinal disputes of the fourth century. The significance of the Life of Antony is demonstrated by the fact that it was translated into Latin twice within two decades after its composition. The first version prepared by an anonymous translator shortly after Athanasius completed his Greek text provides a literal translation that is extant in only one complete manuscript. The literary translation prepared by Evagrius of Antioch in 373 was rapidly and widely transmitted throughout the Latin West. New editions of both translations are presented in this volume with the edition of Evagrius's translation based on 28 manuscripts dating from the ninth to the eleventh century. In recognition of the close relationship between these ancient Latin translations and the Greek original of the Life of Antony this volume also includes an Appendix in which the text of these new editions is provided in parallel columns alongside the edition of the Greek text that was published by G.J.M. Bartelink in 1994 Sources Chrétiennes 400. TABLE OF CONTENTS Athanasius Alexandrinus - Vita Antonii versio vetustissima interpretis anonymi - CPG 2101a - ed. L. 1681Best.-Nr. 641Paris: Chez Edme Couterot rue Saint-Jacques au Bon Pasteur 1681. First edition. Contemporary full mottled calf gilt spine with floral devices in six compartments and raised bands red morocco label titled “EFFET DES FERM.” Double-ruled borders to boards red-speckled edges and attractive marbled endpapers. Binding tight and handsome with only light rubbing to extremities and minor wear at crown. A remarkable 17th-century exploration of biological fermentation and early physiological chemistry written by Jean Pascal 1642–1699 a French physician active during the reign of Louis XIV. In La Nouvelle Découverte Pascal investigates the theory of fermentation as a fundamental principle of life interpreting bodily functions—digestion respiration and even thought—as chemical processes driven by “ferments.” His argument aligns with the emerging mechanical and corpuscular philosophies of the period bridging alchemical tradition and the new experimental science championed by figures like Boyle and van Helmont. This work represents an important precursor to biochemical and metabolic theory framed through empirical observation and early chemical reasoning. Richly produced the volume opens with a fine engraved portrait of the author facing the title page both executed with characteristic late-Baroque elegance. The dedication is addressed to Antoine Daquin physician to Louis XIV situating Pascal within the intellectual milieu of the royal medical establishment. The book comprises fifteen “Lettres” covering the nature of fermentation solution and coagulation the role of ferments in the blood and nerves and their connection to vitality and disease. A sophisticated synthesis of medicine natural philosophy and proto-chemistry—illustrating the intellectual transition between Paracelsian vitalism and Enlightenment empiricism. Condition: Interior clean and crisp with light age toning faint tide marks to a few leaves not affecting text and early ownership inscription on front blank. Engraved portrait sharp and well-inked. A very good well-preserved copy of a scarce 17th-century medical treatise. Overall very good. Chez Edme Couterot, rue Saint-Jacques, au Bon Pasteur unknown

1837Best.-Nr. 202347Venice: In Insula S. Lazari 1837. Hardcover. Very Good. Signed. Full leather binding with gilt lettering & decoration to spine gilt ruled borders on both boards all edges gilt marbled endpapers engraved frontispiece and title page 6-1/4" x 4” 434 pp. Aucher’s name appears in three different versions on the first leaf: Armenian transliterated Armenian and Latin dated 1847. George Gordon Lord Byron traveled to the Island of St. Lazar where Father Pascal Aucher 1774-1854 taught him Armenian. Together they published Grammar of the English and Armenian Languages in 1819 and contributed to Aucher’s 1821 English Armenian Dictionary. Byron was devoted to the Armenian language writing: “I learned the language of the Armenians in order to understand how and what language the Gods spoke for the Armenian language is the language of the Gods and Armenia is the homeland of the Gods and the Gods come from the Ararat valley.”A translation of twenty-four prayers one for each hour of the day of St. Nerses the Graceful translated into twenty-four languages. This is the culmination of an effort that first had 6 10 14 and then 16 translations. This effort was likely from many of the Mekhitarist monks at San Lazzaro degli Armeni. The monastery was founded in 1715 by twelve monks; when Byron visited there were 70; today there are 12 monks and five novices. Despite the small population St. Lazzaro has been a major center of Armenian studies for centuries and still maintains the third-largest library of Armenian materials in the world. This polyglot prayer book is notable not just for its place in Armenian history and the spread of Orthodoxy but it is also a typographic success in acquiring the various fonts. In Insula S.
