1919réf. 3134A good to very good copy of the first trade edition with Harry Clarke's famous illustrations. This was Clarke's second published work and was illustrated with black and white plates. It was reprinted 4 years later with some additional colour plates. Clarke's style beautifully complements Poe's writing. With 24 full page plates including the frontispiece and numerous designs a particularly spooky example at the end of the book. The sage green cloth binding with black titles and decoration to the front board and gilt titles to the spine is clean and sound. The front board has some surface and edge scuffing with wear to the corners. The spine is rubbed towards the top and bottom with some fraying to the ends - particularly at the top where there is a small cloth tear at the joint with the front board. The gilt titles are bright. The back board has surface rubbing particularly at the spine joint edges where there are few tiny pale spots and corners. Top page edges are gilted; remainder untrimmed. The contents are complete and very clean with a few text pages unopened. Both free endpapers are browned and there is some foxing to the text particularly the pages before and after the plates. There is a dark mark on the side margin of p148 which is mirrored on the opposing plate margin. The plate at p30 has a slightly rough edge towards the top. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images. George G Harrap & Co Ltd hardcover

Studied at the Hans Hofmann School in Munich. Provenance Estate of Paul Lombard.
