1776réf. 88BECZ01U79OLondon =Venice 1776. 19th-century blank wrappers. 8vo. With the engraved portrait of Louis Goudar on the title-page. First and only edition of this rare polemical pamphlet written in defence of Giacomo Casanova's 1725-1798 Italian translation of Homer's Iliad against the vehement criticism of Louis Goudar. The work was published in response to the attacks levelled by the controversial French writer Goudar on the first two volumes Books I-XII of Casanova's Italian translation of the Iliad published in 1775-1776. Goudar's hostile review prompted this spirited and often highly personal rebuttal which not only defends Casanova's literary achievement but also launches a fierce counterattack on his critic.Although the pamphlet bears the name of Antonio Piazza 1742-1825 it is generally accepted that Casanova himself collaborated closely in its composition. Drawing on biographical details and personal knowledge the text goes well beyond a conventional literary defence exposing episodes from Goudar's private life in an attempt to undermine his authority. As Rives Childs observed Casanova's hand is unmistakable: "Although not mentioned by Pollio there can be no doubt that Casanova collaborated with Antonio Piazza in the drafting of this pamphlet." The passage referring to Goudar's life in London his lavish household and his questionable associates has long been regarded as one of the clearest indications of Casanova's direct involvement.Uncut copy the last quire is loosening.
