réf. 97942A Londres et se trouve à Paris chez Maradan 1789. 8vo. 1 folding map in frontispiece. 3 leaves. 443 pages. 2 leaves. 6 folding plates. Half-calf flat spine contemporary binding. First Edition of the first French translation of this interesting work situated at the crossroads of enlightment literature travel accounts and feminism. Abandoned by her husband with whom she had had 7 children Lady Craven asked for a divorce and left England to travel. The account of her journey published in London in 1789 was written in English under the form of letters addressed to the Margrave of Anspach - her future husband. She describes her travels through France Italy Russia and Crimea to Constantinople and back to England through Bulgaria Romania and Austria. This edition published by Maradan with the supposed address of London seems to have been published without authorization a few months before the authorized edition which was translated by the bookseller and published at his own shop by official permission. This curious example of editorial piracy demonstrates how successful the work became when issued in England. Folding map of Crimea placed in front of the title-page and 6 large folding plates printed on strong paper. Nice copy with the engraved exlibris of Louis Montandon. Hage Chahine Guide du Livre Orientaliste 1132. unknown

First American edition originally published in the UK in 1732. Berkeley 1685-1753 wrote the Alciphron during the years 1729 to 1731 while relaxing in Newport Rhode Island where he was awaiting funds which never came for his projected college in the Bermudas. This this is the first major philosophical work to be written in America though published in London first. The book attracted more attention than any of his previous works. The dialogues it contains constitute a defense of Christianity from the point of view of an Anglican divine. Alciphron is regarded as an outstanding example of English literature among works on philosophy. It is described on the title-page as an Apology for the Christian Religion against those who are called Free-Thinkers and the Dialogues defend revealed religion against the current beliefs of the Deists. Luce places Alciphron with Joseph Butler s Analogy 1736 as the only comparable book on Christian apologetics in the eighteenth century Keynes p. 37 Sidney's Press, for Increase Cooke & Co. hardcover
