1893Best.-Nr. 14427Toledo OH: The Toledo Blade Co 1893. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo 510pp. illustrated. BAL's "third printing" collating to 510pp. and with the frontispiece portrait of Locke appearing to be an integral leaf. Very good in the publisher's tan cloth over thin boards. A cheaply produced book with the printing plates heavily degraded in some places producing some shoddy-quality printing. Still sound and clean better than usually found with only mild wear to the extremities and the inner hinges tender but sound. Locke a humorist in the vein of his contemporary Mark Twain wrote letters to the Toledo Blade--a newspaper which he would go on to buy in 1867--under the pseudonym of "Petroleum V. Nasby." Nasby was an ignorant bigot who supposedly defected from the Union to the Confederate army during the Civil War though he deserts the Confederates after being unable to adjust to army life. He is constantly misspelling words and betraying a drunken oafish hateful personality as he bloviates on world affairs. Like Twain Locke was partly celebrating but mostly criticizing the ordinary American ignoramus though amusing satire. Lincoln reportedly devoured the Nasby letters and made a habit of reading them aloud to visiting dignitaries. BAL 11851. The Toledo Blade Co hardcover

His plays some of which were dramatized versions of his novels were all produced with success on the London Stage." His books were often on the US best-selling lists and many were adapted to film or stage.
