'There are innumerable translations of Plato's Republic into English the Jowett and the Cornford being the best known. But Professor Allan Bloom's version will be the only available translation which attempts to be strictly literal. . . Moreover he is convinced that the Platonic dialogues are written on several levels and that the text is never as simple and straightforward as it seems at a cursory glance. He has therefore provided those of us who do not read Greek with the closest translation of the original that has yet been published in English in order that we can come to our own interpretations rather than be dependent on the translator's incomplete interpretation. In addition to the text itself there is a rich and invaluable interpretive essay - as well as indexes and a glossary of terms - which will better enable the student to approach the heart of Plato's intention.' Translated with Notes and Interpretive Essay by Allan Bloom. 2nd Printing 1968. xx487 pages. Photos available upon request. Basic Books Hardcover

1826rif. D32Well-worn leather-bound set complete in 11 volumes. 1826. Fair. All covers worn; significant fading to gilt spines cover decorations and marbled edges. Spine beginning to detach from volume one. All volumes lack leather spine labels except VII. Sporadic notes and marginalia throughout the set as well as light foxing. 1968rif. 148529New York: The Limited Editions Club 1968. The Limited Editions Club signed limited edition of Plato’s dialogues on love and friendship. Octavo bound in full modern morocco with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands gilt ruling to the front and rear panels all edges gilt gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers with black and white illustrations. Boldly signed by illustrator Eugene Karlin on the colophon page at the rear. One of 1500 numbered copies this is number 511. In fine condition. Translated from the Greek with introductory analyses by Benjamin Jowett. Preface by Whitney J. Oates. Illustrated by Eugene Karlin. Plato’s 'Dialogues on Love and Friendship'—comprising Lysis Symposium and Phaedrus—offer a philosophical exploration of the nature purpose and transformative potential of human relationships. In Lysis Plato raises fundamental questions about the essence of friendship ultimately leaving the concept unresolved thus inviting continued reflection on the basis of interpersonal bonds. The Symposium presents a series of speeches culminating in Socrates’ recounting of Diotima’s teaching which elevates erotic love eros from physical desire to a philosophical longing for eternal truth and beauty. In Phaedrus love is portrayed as a form of divine madness that when rightly guided leads the soul toward recollection of the Forms and a higher understanding of the self. Together these dialogues construct a nuanced vision of love and friendship as ethical and metaphysical forces that can either enslave or liberate the soul depending on their alignment with reason and the pursuit of the good. 1833rif. 6321New York: W. Gowan 1833. Very good. 2092pp. 12mo. Original boards cloth spine; printed paper label. Corners worn and bumped head and foot of spine chipped and worn label rubbed. Contemporary ownership inscription on front flyleaf. Light foxing. Untrimmed. First American edition of Plato's Phaedon originally from a run of 2500 copies and the first edition of any of Plato's works to be published in the United States. It was translated from the Greek by Andre Dacier though attributed on the title page to Madam Anne Lefevre Dacier. Stoddard notes that in some copies the dedication to Washington Irving appears on p.3 with the Advertisement printed on its verso. In this copy the dedication is omitted and p.3 contains the Advertisement with a blank verso. The evidence thus points to two distinct states with no priority given. According to the Dictionary of American Biography this is the publisher's first output. The ownership signature J.W. French is likely that of John W. French an Episcopal clergyman and educator and later West Point chaplain. He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford in 1832 and subsequently from General Theological Seminary in New York City. Renowned for his scholarship in Greek Latin and moral philosophy this work would naturally have been of interest. A handsome copy in original unsophisticated condition. W. Gowan unknown
1962rif. 148539New York: The Limited Editions Club 1962. The Limited Editions Club signed limited edition of this collection of four dialogues written by Plato recounting the death of Socrates. Octavo bound in full modern morocco by Sangorski & Sutcliffe with gilt titles to the spine in six compartments within raised bands top edge gilt gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers with color illustrations. Boldly signed by illustrator Hans Erni and printer Giovanni Mardersteig of Verona at the Officina Bodoni on the colophon page at the rear. One of 1500 numbered copies this is number 437. In fine condition. Translated from the Greek with introductory analyses by Benjamin Jowett. Preface by Huntington Cairns. Illustrated by Hans Erni. Plato’s The Trial and Death of Socrates is a foundational text in Western philosophy that explores the ethical and political implications of Socrates' final days. Comprising four dialogues—Euthyphro Apology Crito and Phaedo—the work examines the nature of justice the role of the individual in society and the immortality of the soul. In Apology Socrates defends his philosophical mission as a divine duty challenging the moral complacency of Athenian society. Crito presents a powerful argument for obeying the law even in the face of injustice while Phaedo offers a vision of death as a release of the soul to a higher realm. Together these dialogues portray Socrates not only as a martyr for truth but also as a model of rational integrity whose commitment to philosophy transcends the fear of death.
