1609réf. BK-GUHQDMCambridge University Press 2016-09-08. Softcover. collectible_like_new. Plato's Laws is one of the most important surviving works of ancient Greek political thought. It offers sustained reflection on the enterprise of legislation and on its role in the social and religious regulation of society in all its aspects. Many of its ideas were drawn upon by later political thinkers from Aristotle and Cicero to Thomas More and Montesquieu. This book presents the first translation of the complete text of the Laws for thirty-five years in Tom Griffith's readable and reliable English. Malcolm Schofield a leading scholar of Greek philosophy introduces the main themes and characteristics of the work as well as supplying authoritative notes on the structure and detail of Plato's argument together with a guide to further reading. The book will be a key resource for those interested in Greek philosophy and of the history of political thought. Cambridge University Press paperback
1833réf. 6321New York: W. Gowan 1833. Very good. 2092pp. 12mo. Original boards cloth spine; printed paper label. Corners worn and bumped head and foot of spine chipped and worn label rubbed. Contemporary ownership inscription on front flyleaf. Light foxing. Untrimmed. First American edition of Plato's Phaedon originally from a run of 2500 copies and the first edition of any of Plato's works to be published in the United States. It was translated from the Greek by Andre Dacier though attributed on the title page to Madam Anne Lefevre Dacier. Stoddard notes that in some copies the dedication to Washington Irving appears on p.3 with the Advertisement printed on its verso. In this copy the dedication is omitted and p.3 contains the Advertisement with a blank verso. The evidence thus points to two distinct states with no priority given. According to the Dictionary of American Biography this is the publisher's first output. The ownership signature J.W. French is likely that of John W. French an Episcopal clergyman and educator and later West Point chaplain. He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford in 1832 and subsequently from General Theological Seminary in New York City. Renowned for his scholarship in Greek Latin and moral philosophy this work would naturally have been of interest. A handsome copy in original unsophisticated condition. W. Gowan unknown
