Binding tight and solid. Francis Bacon presents a paradox. He is celebrated by many as the earliest thinker to grasp the implication of the scientific method. Bacon nevertheless rejected the most celebrated scientific discoveries of his own time and opposed the Copernican system with particular severity. Harvey the discoverer of the circulation of the blood remarked that Bacon wrote science more like a Lord Chancellor than a scientist. Bacon however persistently attacked scholasticism for he wished to deliver the world from Aristotelianism and did much with his persuasive writing to substitute for it the inductive method. The De Augmentis Scientiarum is an expansion of Bacon's earlier work The Advancement of Learning first published in 1605. It was part of a tremendous project The Great Renewal which was left far from complete. In the preface Bacon wrote I have propounded my opinion naked and unarmed not seeking preoccupate the liberty of mens judgment by confutations. The New Atlantis written in 1627 is a scientific Utopia; the central establishment was the so-called House of Solomon the laboratory of co-operating scientists honored above all other men. In Wisdom of the Ancients he tries to explain ancient fables by ingenious allegories. Bacon polished all his prose sentences until they reached a shining beauty that was almost poetic. His purpose was teaching men to think more wisely and his motto was Discriminate. EB; 8vo 8" - 9" tall . hardcover

1840réf. 136220Norwich: printed by Bacon Kinnebrook and Bacon 1840. From a Norwich poet to an affectionate friend First edition presentation copy inscribed by the author on the half-title "Mrs Howlett from her affectionate friend MAB". The title page declares "Not published" indicating a work intended for private circulation. The poem recounts the legend of Saint Bernard of Menthon associated with the Alpine pass that bears his name. Mary Ann Bacon d. 1875 was the daughter of Richard Mackenzie Bacon 1776-1844 proprietor of the Norwich Mercury and a partner in the printing firm responsible for the book. She contributed to the New Monthly Magazine and was particularly accomplished in translating German French and Italian songs. Her obituary in Norfolk Annals praised her literary and musical talents. Published anonymously the poem has sometimes been wrongly attributed. Cornell University identifies Thomas Noon Talfourd as its author while other libraries leave it anonymous. A copy at Stanford bears an 1842 presentation inscription from Richard Mackenzie Bacon identifying himself as "the father of the authoress" providing contemporary evidence for its attribution. Cambridge University Library preserves manuscripts of Mary Ann Bacon's poetry and translations. Octavo 226 x 140 mm. "Bacon's greatest service to anti-Stuart causes. probably written using notes collected by John Selden. Published. to justify the Long Parliament's war against Charles I with a continuation appearing in 1651 the work has been referred to as 'the English Francogallia'. it argued with unrelenting force an anti-royalist ideology of enormous persuasive power. This was the radical ancient constitution which. was first fully articulated during the civil wars by polemicists such as William Prynne and Bacon himself. Early a mainstay of the Long Parliament's cause the ideology consisted of the following propositions: first while government in general was from God the particular form came from the people. Writing a summation of his work in 1651 Bacon re-emphasized the continuity of an elective and contractual monarchy and a parliament which oversaw its proper functioning. With a salute to both past and present he wrote at the very end of his tract: 'as I found this nation a commonwealth so I leave it and so it may be forever'" ODNB. Wing B348B.
