FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request - IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT - Flawless copy brand new pristine never opened -- 32 pp. ; 23 ills. -- with a bonus offer--; Francis Bacon is seen internationally as one of the greatest of all British painters forever connected in the public mind with the city of London. Up to this point little has been known or written about the months he spent in the isolated fishing settlement of St Ives in Cornwall; nonetheless this book demonstrates that this period of seclusion played a vital part in the genesis of his next creative step. Following his first one-man show at London's I.C.A. in 1955 Bacon came to the attention of a wide audience for the first time. He decided to sever his connection with the Hanover Gallery and was taken on by Marlborough Fine Art in 1958. Encouragement to spend time in St Ives came from his new gallerists who were well aware of his unpredictable lifestyle in London and concerned that he concentrated on creating new work for their exhibition. They secured him a studio at No.3 Porthmeor Studios St Ives where he stayed between September 1959 and January 1960. This book that accompanies a Tate St Ives exhibition focusing on Bacon's art between 1957 and 1962 presents a number of the works he painted whilst in St Ives together with a selection of paintings and drawings made both shortly before and after this period. Bacon's concentration during this time on the solitary figure lying down sleeping or walking and his experimentation with brush strokes colour and chiaroscuro to create an illusion of a "moulded" form or face is presented as a result of the important explorative time the painter spent in St Ives. . 2007. 1854377523 . 1880réf. 15390London: Bacon's Map Establishment 127 Strand 1880. 760 by 1080mm. 30 by 42.5 inches. Lithograph map with original hand colouring dissected and laid on linen folding into red cloth covers lettered in gilt pricelist and instructions labels on pastedowns upper board detached. George Washington Bacon 1830-1922 was an American publisher working in Britain. His first business failed and he declared bankruptcy in 1867 but reopened on the Strand in 1870 and built his house into one of the most successful in London. The map of Kensington spans from Paddington to the north and Fulham to the south and Hammersmith to the west and Green Park to the east. It prominently shows the Henry Lovibond & Son Cannon Brewery on the Lillie Road highlighted with red circles radiating from it in half mile increments with the first being a quarter mile in distance. Henry Lovibond c.1840-1910 was a brewer from Clerkenwell who acquired 'The Hermitage' villa and the remnants of its park on the corner of Lillie and North End Roads in 1867 and in the same year he built his Cannon's brewery there. Kensington was already an affluent borough after substantial redevelopment in the early nineteenth century but in recent decades it had become a cultural centre as well. The Great Exhibition took place in Hyde Park in 1851 and the cultural complex known as Albertopolis began to form: the South Kensington Museum & School now the Victoria & Albert Museum opened in 1857 the Natural History Museum in 1881 and in 1881 and the Royal Albert Hall in 1871. 1941réf. 397729Philadelphia Pennsylvania 1941. Hardcover. Very Good. Small black three-ring binder. Quarto. Binding is very good with wear to the edges and the bottom front joints starting. Contents very good with reading wear at the ring holes and some modest toning and offsetting. Contains roughly 350 densely-typed pages both recto and verso with occasional ephemera mounted throughout. More than 150000 words and appears complete. An extraordinary vernacular history of the outbreak of World War II. Though the title page suggests a diary covering only a brief period the project seems to have quickly outgrown Bacon's original intentions. From the German invasion of Poland September 1 1939 through the bombing of Pearl Harbor for more than two years Bacon records the latest news and developments from Europe and elsewhere. Summarizing and sometimes transcribing both radio reports and newspaper headlines Bacon writes clearly and with a strong narrative often deftly juggling multiple developments throughout the world. Bacon’s father appears to have been a prominent Quaker from the Philadelphia area which may account for his obsession with the war. He attended Haverford College from 1920-23. Curiously the Haverford yearbook contains this remembrance of Bacon: "By no means the least marvelous of his accomplishments is his uncanny ability to sit down at a typewriter and tear off unlimited numbers of theses at the terrific rate of nearly a thousand words per hour." An intriguing day-to-day account of the war by a Philadelphia pacifist. hardcover

Together the works form the second and third parts of Bacon's ambitious plan to reform the nature of philosophical and scientific enquiry. In Bacon's own words the Instauratio Magna was to be 'no more but a new logic teaching to invent and judge by induction as finding syllogism incompetent for sciences of nature and thereby to make philosophy and sciences both more true and more active' Letter to King James Bacon 1874 pp11920. This ambition to bridge the old and new worlds is symbolised in the famous engraved title-page by Simon van der Passe showing a sailing ship passing through the Pillars of Hercules: 'Multi pertransibunt et augebitur scientia' 'Many will pass through and knowledge will be the greater'. With excellent provenance for the Anglican clergyman social reformer and novelist Charles Kingsley 1819-1875 best-known for his association with Christian socialism and the founding of working men's colleges.
