1820ref. 3572n.p n.p c1820s 1820. A set of six hand-coloured lithographs on card showing the hand signals made to communicate from a distance when game shooting. Mounted on linen with two backed with marbled card so that these form the covers when folded. The folded set is housed in a marbled paper covered card slip-case. Each card measures 66x132mm and unfolded the whole is 200x265mm. The prints are in superb condition with the colours particularly fresh and bright. They are undated but the clothes are clearly of the Regency period and much is made of the newly fashionable top hat which was the headwear of choice for the sporting gentleman for most of the nineteenth century. In part they are instructional showing how to signal when a dog is required or when you want someone to "bring the powder and shot" but there is a gently humorous element as well particularly in the last card showing our hero holding his gun aloft. Balancing on the end of the barrels is his top hat. This elaborate manoeuvre means we are told "luncheon". Charming and the best part of the day. We have been unable to trace another set of these prints. n.p c1820s hardcover

Fascinating works of American naval history hailing from the Library of Congress. Six very scarce volumes - containing fifteen issues - of the Navy and Marine Corps List and Directory better known as the 'Navy Directory' published from February 1918 to April 1919 and thus covering the final months of the First World War.The Navy Directory was an official U.S. government publication listing officers of the United States Navy and Marine Corps. It contained names ranks duty assignments and other relevant information about naval and Marine Corps personnel during World War I.These volumes are from the US Library of Congress with their stamp reading 'Surplus - 1 Library of Congress Duplicate' to a front blank of each volume. This directory was essential for maintaining personnel records providing insight into the organisational structure of the Navy and Marine Corps. With a fascinating wartime context the lists includes officers involved in major naval operations ship assignments and administrative roles. Each issue retains the original front wrap and title page. While the 1918 issues are labelled 'Confidential' to the front wrap head and are numbered so as to keep track of their distribution by 1919 the war was over and thus the issues are not numbered and are no longer labelled as confidential.Present here are:Volume I: February No. 254 March No. 1115 and April No. 25 1918 issues. While the February issue is titled 'Navy and Marine Corps List and Directory' in all subsequent issues it was renamed and titled simply 'Navy Directory'.Volume II: May No. 689 June No. 21 July No. 1447.Volume III: August No. 1611 September No. 66Volume IV: October No. 76 November No. 1073 December No. 925Volume V: January and February 1919Volume VI: March and April 1919.During the publication of these volumes the President was Woodrow Wilson the Secretary of the Navy was Josephus Daniels and the Assistant Secretary of the Navy was Franklin D. In half calf bindings with cloth covered boards and gilt details to back strip. Externally very smart. Light fading and rubbing to head and fore edges of volume I boards. Internally firmly bound but with two leaves of volume I detached and loosely inserted and one leaf of volume V detached and loosely inserted. Handling marks to wraps. Pages bright and generally clean with only the odd library stamp. Colour pencil inscriptions to front wrap of two volumes. Clear tape repairs to head of final leaf of volume I and to one or two further leaves. Very Good Indeed Government Printing Office hardcover

1879ref. 13448London: Sampson Low Marston Searle & Rivington 1879. First. Hardback. Very Good. A very good copy. Uncommon. "Erchomenon; or the Republic of Materialism is one of the earliest examples of dystopian fiction and a sleeper-awakes narrative in the tradition that Wells would later develop more famously. A Victorian English gentleman reading by his fireside in 1877 finds himself transported to a technologically advanced future London whose aerial cars compressed-air transport and vast urban density suggest a world of material progress. For Watson the technological progress is ironic backdrop to a darker argument. A society organized around French philosopher Auguste Comte's positivism and Darwin's natural selection having expelled God and Christian faith has produced something monstrous beneath its efficient surface. Children are separated from their parents at birth and raised collectively in state baby farms. Euthanasia is applied to the sick and infirm as a matter of routine. The first scene the protagonist witnesses on arrival is a doctor strangling an injured man on the street while the crowd watches with indifference. Marriage has been replaced by contract and Westminster Abbey by a Temple of Humanity. Christianity survives only in remote communities clinging to their old beliefs." Mostly Dystopian Books. A little rubbing to the edges softening to the spine tips and a slight lean. Small stamp to the title page and front endpaper has a corner missing. Top edge dusty. 1850ref. 9387Japan c. 1850. Manuscript map sheet size 48.2 x 73.7 cm ink on laid paper. The focus of the map is Toyama a significant sea-port in what was once Etchu province on Honshu. On stylistic grounds the map appears to date from the mid 19th century and the script is pre-Meji era. Toyama and the surrounding towns are shown in the yellow circles linked by red roads and regions are also named. It is unsigned on the back of the map is written 'Etchu Map'. Most of the text concerns distances a form of mileage table. There is a note top right which appears to indicate that the information in red is less certain than the information in black. Various other things are shown on the map: shrines and temples hot springs and a gate where travellers would have to show passports. Map unknown
