1840ref. 202531840. A charming Folk Art watercolor probably English but there's no way to know for sure. The girl's face is rendered skillfully -- it appears true-to-life. The features are not the least bit distorted and such details as skin color are nicely captured as well. But the rest of the body is positioned in a manner not humanly possibleN.d. Circa 1840 based on the clothing. The painting is on a card leaf measuring about 28 by 22 cm. The artist drew a neat pencil line in which to keep the painting thereby creating a margin of about 3 cm around the whole perimeter. unknown books

Hardcover. no dust jacket moderately shelfworn copy with numerous abrasions to cloth along top and bottom edges of both covers some wear at spine ends modest bumping at all corners some discoloration in gutters. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the ffep: "To Robert Rainer / With kindest regards / Frederick Hazlitt Brennan / Santa Ana Jan. 4 1944." One of the odder novels you'll ever run across -- as one contemporary reviewer described it "a singularly unclassifiable mixture of whimsey dullness vulgarity and illuminating thought." It's kind of a fantasy-satire in which the title character a Big Thinker expounds at great length upon his plan to establish an experimental educational institution rather ominously dubbed "The Laboratory" the purpose of which would be to teach people particularly children to love their country through a program of lectures thought experiments and entertainments. Brother Barnabas has holed himself up in a poorhouse in order to hatch his scheme which he hopes to persuade a rich acquaintance to bankroll to the tune of ten million dollars. Another critic of the day praised it as some of "the most exciting social sermonizing that you will read in many a dreary year" and opined that "you are as dead as John Marshall if you do not thrill to the blasting dynamic fire-spitting challenge of brave Brother Barnabas who thinks that Americans should be taught to love their country even if they need strip-teasers and Mickey Mouse pictures to coax them to it." Apparently the idea behind Brennan's publishing the book pseudonymously was so that his own reputation primarily as a prolific author of magazine fiction and sometime-screenwriter wouldn't get in the way of his Big Ideas about what was ailing modern American society and how to fix it. In any event however the anonymity had a short shelf-life: the book was published in April 1940 and by early July he'd already been outed as its author by who else Walter Winchell. There was a little flurry of gossip-column items that July in fact claiming that the book was "a sensation in Hollywood" and that a movie version was in the offing -- backed by "top democrats" in one telling; possibly to star Raymond Massey in another -- but no such film ever materialized. Signed-by-the-author copies are for understandable reasons uncommon. Signed by Author . Richard R. Smith hardcover books
1933ref. 21769New York: The Macaulay Company. Near Fine in Near Fine dj. c.1933. First Edition. Hardcover. nice tight clean copy minor shelfwear only; jacket very attractive with just a touch of soiling and a couple of tiny edge-nicks. The trials and tribulations of an unwed mother -- or more precisely a divorcee who gets knocked up by her lover then refuses his half-hearted marriage proposal and subsequently suffers "pain hunger want." The jacket copy really goes to town in the best Macaulay house style: "No human experience is so profound and rich in emotion as the long crisis of pregnancy . . . and when the expected child must legally be fatherless then crisis is added upon crisis. . . . It is amazing that this situation has never before been treated in all its dramatic fullness. In this book the anonymous author tells a story that for sheet intensity and stark realism has not been equalled in modern fiction. . . . The book is more than literature. It is life itself." 1943ref. 0072801943. Hardcover. Cloth Box. Very Good. Inimitable and disarming tales that represent the pinnacle of outsider art and folk art with the naive drawings richly full of life as they speak of the daily routine at a British army camp during the Second World War from the point-of-view of a camp mascot cat who excels at mangling English in its creative attempts at phonetic spelling. Folios are oblong 41 by 30 cm each. The first folio contains "The Alterbyografy" a 56 pages long unpaginated with 54 illustrations including the folio cover 28 of which are full page 24 of which are half page. The second folio is entitled "Kamp Karacters" . This is 51 leaves with 92 illustrations including the cover 51 of which are full page 40 a third page generally with the area above entirely blank. Illustrations are rendered with colored pencil and crayon. The first manuscript is a continuous narrative of army life its humdrum rhythms and routines its various inanities its social life sports and other activities etc. while the second part is more character sketches. The second folio is even more visually driven than the autobiography. Another distinction between the two is that the autobiography is done with the leaves oblong while the character studies are applied with the leaves vertical. While one part isn't exactly a sequel to the other the two parts are truly complementary. The two folios are of a rough burlap material with a large title sheet mounted on their front cover. The folios have three flap folds to hold the loose sheets in plus ribbon ties on their right sides. hardcover books

1770ref. 103721770. Hand-coloured engraving. Trimmed as usual and mounted on washline background. Mounting sheet is watermarked laid paper. Image size: 14 1/8 x 20 1/8 inches. A wonderful romantic view in the grand tradition of the picturesque English landscape. Towards the middle of the eighteenth century a trend developed amongst English artists and printmakers which sought to visually record the natural beauties of England and Wales. Sparked by a sense of national confidence and patriotism English printmakers began to publish topographical prints of the important sights in the British Isles. In addition to being a visual record of the countryside they were meant to encourage public recognition of the beauty and history of England. They were aimed at English and foreign tourists who desired a memento of their travels or at those vicarious tourists who collected topographical prints instead of traveling. This is a wonderful example of a picturesque eighteenth century landscape print. By trimming the image within the platemark and mounting it on a decorative washline background the print has the effect of a landscape painting. The likeness is heightened by the addition of added body colour in the image and the use of a heavy painterly technique of engraving. This practice was common amongst engravers and printsellers who wished to capitalize on this trend for picturesque landscapes of the English countryside. This print is from the famed Oettingen-Wallerstein collection which was compiled over two centuries by various members of the royal household. The collection is known for its stunning impressions and the immaculate condition of its prints.
