Program single sheet printed recto and verso; 5 x 8; mint-green paper printed in various elaborate fonts; small nick to top edge; a few faint crease lines; minor age-toning; very good. The program commemorated a benefit concert for the Oakland Light Cavalry Company - a volunteer organization of initially 101 men which was established earlier that same year in 1877. In the years between 1867 and 1877 Oakland had been steadily growing - boasting new residences sewage system and improvements to the harbor. On the other hand the progress had merchants and citizens worried about overpopulation waterfront problems and civil unrest. It did not help the matter that groups of hoodlums from Oakland and San Francisco would roam around and look for any chance to "help" start riots and disobedience. To keep the agitators at bay was the reason the Cavalry Company was formed. The men furnished their own horses carried themselves as soldiers and saved the county thousands of dollars in salaries to the active duty men employed to deal with the unrest. The Dietz Opera House c. 1874–1911 was Oakland's very first theatre located on the northeast corner of Webster Street and 12th Street. The opera house was on the second floor while the first floor housed a saloon. It is known that at some point of the theater's history Jack London delivered a lecture on Socialism there and around 1911 the Socialist Party had its headquarters in the building around 1911 Alfred Dietz had sold the theater in 1903. On May 1 1911 the Dietz Opera House burned to the ground amidst speculations that the fire was deliberately set to "dislodge" the Socialists. N/A paperback books

"Valdez represents the tragedy of mining towns. It is really a dead mining town & it is a real tragedy to walk through and see the great number of vacant houses. Really it is hard to understand the lure of such a place." "Anchorage was created as an operating base for the construction of the railroad and has large permanent railroad yards & shops. It is the youngest and most up to date town in Alaska. For the tourist however it has little of interest." "Fairbanks a town almost exclusively of log cabins. the city is isolated because of its great distance from anywhere and people of the States do not care to spend so much time in traveling to reach the place." books

"A novel of protest written by a young apostle of revolt against the present system of education in the colleges." Although the author is not identified by gender the book seems to have a definite feminist slant telling of the travails of a young graduate student teaching Freshman English while dealing with "the undercurrent of malice and politics" at the university. She finds that "the departments are run by old men who have lost touch with the students" and feels herself "powerless to defeat the red-tape and apathetic disregard of the older men." Neither the city nor the specific university in the book are identified but add the Chicago imprint to the description of the school "on the shore of the great lake in the broad Middle-West" do the math and get back to me about where YOU think it is. The author of the 1962 study "The College Novel in America" speculated that the book was "possibly by Zoë Flannagan" but gives no indication who the hell "Zoë Flannagan" might have been. Thanks for nothing. . Covici-McGee Co. hardcover books
