1950ref. 50163N.p. United States: s.i. 1950. Very Good. United States: 1950s or later. Pair of large watercolor and marker portraits of likely the same woman on thick cream paper one slightly shorter than the other 55x36cm; 52x36cm. Lacking any identifying artist markings. Edges toned corners creased and mild dust-soiling overall. Closed tear to bottom right corner of the larger portrait. Otherwise Very Good or better. Likely from a large sketch book the same young woman reclines barefoot for two different sittings. In one she sits in her red-striped shirt dress resting her head on her crossed arms gazing off past the left of the artist. In the other she reclines similarly but in a green playsuit leaning on her right arm with the left at rest in her lap her gaze shifted more towards the artist who sits closer to her this time. The date range is based on her clothing and likely done fairly close together. s.i. unknown books
ref. 88729Np.n.d. Original oil portrait of Soviet revolutionary leader Vladimir Lenin aka Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov 1870-1924. Unsigned; placed into carved glazed convex frame to mimic a reverse-painting on glass. Not examined out of frame; sight condition excellent. Frame shows some damage to gesso at borders Very Good. A well-executed folk-art portrait of Lenin standing before a background of industrial plants a hydroelectric dam possibly the Dnieper and a railway locomotive. Undated but if the dam pictured is indeed intended to be the Dnieper then presumably after 1930 - which tracks as the style is highly evocative of the decade of the Thirties and popular Five Year Plan propaganda. unknown books

1710ref. 1200341710. First Edition. SLAVERY ANONYMOUS. A True State of the Present Difference Between the Royal African Company and the Separate Traders. London: No publisher 1710. Slim octavo period-style full tan sheep gilt red morocco spine label raised bands; pp. 40. $1650.First edition of this argument against providing a monopoly over the British slave trade to the Royal African Company with tipped-in diagram of one of the Royal African Company's forts. This work attempts to highlight the irregularities of the business practices of the Royal African Company and to argue for the superiority of open trade in Africa particularly as a means of supplying slaves to the American plantations. Founded in 1660 by the royal Stuart family and the City of London the Royal African Company was founded to exploit natural resources like gold along the west coast of Africa. While the Royal African Company did participate heavily in the gold trade the majority of their income came from slave-trading. The Royal African Company was part of a concerted effortÑfully elaboration in the Navigation ActsÑto establish dominance in the slave trade since the Dutch had been the leading slave-traders prior to the Restoration. To that end the Royal African Company established a brutal and highly efficient slave-trading system eventually providing more slaves to the West Indies than any other company or state. The slaves were branded with the initials of the company or its longtime governor the Duke of York. Children were included in the transports. Between 1662 and 1731 the Company transported approximately 212000 slaves a fifth of whom died enroute. While the Company formally gave up slave-trading in 1731 they remained involved in the trade of ivory and gold dust industries dependent on labor exploitation and slavery. Goldsmiths 4605. Kress 2677. Early ink underlining and marginal notations.Small paper repair to diagram text and diagram trimmed close affecting portion of imprint and scattered catchwords not affecting readability. 1915ref. 87274London: E. George & Sons 1915. First Edition. Octavo. 17.5cm. Publisher's grey cloth titled and decorated in dark grey and black to spine and front board. 122pp. Bumped to spine ends with some soiling and discoloration of the cloth in places and some cosmetic wear to corners and edges strong and solid; internally clean with some mild toning to the cheap wartime paper in places and spotting to the page edges. A very good copy with some cosmetic wear. A rather curious little piece ostensibly a collection of short stories from the front penned by a wounded officer returned to civvy life after being part of the BFE. The author is apparently well known as a sporting writer but has chosen to remain anonymous for this little collection presented as short stories but with the warning that only some of them are actually true and the rest mere fiction. The publisher offers up a prize of Five Pounds the equivalent of about $1000 in modern purchasing power for the reader who can correctly identify the true stories and separate them from the fiction. A previous reader has marked neat pencil asterisks next to the tales they feel to be the rue ones on the contents page. An interesting little item and an example of the creative and unconventional lengths publisher's would go to during wartime to encourage readership. E. George & Sons unknown books
1914ref. 87332London 1914. Tall Octavo. 24.5cm. Original green cloth over bevelled boards titled "Photographs" in gilt to the lower front cover. 24pp; 48 3" x 4" black and white images in total. Light bumping and scuffing to corners and spine ends cup ring to front board some light scuffing strong and tight. Internally clean with heavy grey card mounting leaves 2 captioned numbered and often dated images per page. Photographs are clear sharp and well composed with no apparent defects or signs of wear. A very good handsome album. Photographer unidentified. but clearly at least a gifted amateur this album judging from the numbers on the image captions is one surviving volume of at least two or three. The execution is excellent the composition and subject matter are far beyond the usual "Here's a picture of Big Ben!" genre of London photography; major landmarks are represented Hyde Park Kew The Embankment Cleopatra's Needle etc. but the manner of the photography is more artisitic than purely descriptive. The image of Cleopatra's Needle for example is captioned as such but the focus of the image is a small Edwardian boy in a Norfolk Jacket and knickerbockers lounging across one of the bronze sphinxes. The views of the River Thames in particular elevate this album to degree of historical usefulness; the shipping details including a number of photos taken from the water have effectively preserved vernacular images of the sheer weight and diversity of shipping at a time when the river ports of London were the arguably the most important in the world. Aside from the usual luggers and rowboats there are a number of photos of sail wherries and river barges which for a long period of time were the pre-eminent open water trading and delivery vessels in the UK with wherries and shallow water barges making their way from the enormous larder of East Anglia and the North East down to London. Wool potatoes ropetextiles from Manchester steel work from Sheffield and the North West coal from Sunderland and Newcastle all traveled mainly by water right up to the 1940's and in some places later. There were barge crews in the 1960's essentially doing the same jobs in the same vessels that their extended and often clannish families had been doing for 200 years or more. The watermen depicted navigating the Thames' vicious currents in these photos were essentially the same men who carried Pepys Newton and Marlowe backwards and forwards between the palaces of Westminster and the stews bear pits and rookeries of the Surreyside. Where there are clear avenues of industry there are the necessary shadow economies that accompany them; there are a number of images of small ragged children scouring the foreshore or "Mudlarking" as it was known around the breaking wharfs where barges and ships too old and dangerous for use were destroyed for re-usable lumber and fittings. A bag of copper nails or a few salvaged shackles even salvaged rope could be enough to get a few pennies at the back door of Pocock's bargebuilders down near Rotherhithe. In contrast to these off the beaten track images of industry and poverty there are also depictions of the more fortunate wandering around Hyde Park or Kew visiting the Palace or St. James Park. Also present in a slightly forboding fashion is an image of Graham White's biplane flight at Hendon on July 11th 1914 only 17 days before the opening of hostilities in WW1 an event which would quickly transform aviation from a public spectacle of wonder to the pre-eminent weapon of 20th century warfare. The fact that these images were all taken on the very brink of a conflict that would change every aspect of what they depict is sobering; the UK lost almost a million military casualties during the conflict meaning that a very significant number of the men and boys in these images would be dead within a handful of years of them being photographed. In the words of John Burns "Every drop of the Thames is liquid history. unknown books
