Lightly and uniformly age-toned last two pages with faint edge stains; near fine. In fact the text is entirely separate. The present booklet consists of an introduction and the following sections: “Am I an Alcoholic” and then three anonymous and anecdotal stories from four individuals: “The Doctor’s Nightmare” “The European Drinker” and “Women Suffer Too” and “Bill’s Story” Bill Wilson. This is followed by “Medicine Religion and Alcoholics Anonymous” and a page listing the “The Twelve Steps.” The text concludes with testimonials from professionals and religious leaders noting group’s effective approach “Our Friends Say” and a 2-page “Book Review” by Harry Emerson Fosdick of The Big Book 400 pages list price $3.50. This ephemeral rarity is held in America by 9 institutions the most notable being Yale Emory University Boston College the National Library of Medicine and Duke University. unknown
1943ref. 4211New York: Alcoholic Foundation Inc 1943. Very good. 281pp. Original printed wrappers stapled. Moderate toning spotting and edge wear soft central vertical fold throughout. One sentence underlined otherwise clean internally. An early pamphlet issued by Alcoholics Anonymous containing important doctrine from the organization's early years. We have found a way of life which no longer compels us to drink. Alcoholics Anonymous is the great reality which has expelled our obsession." Later in the introduction the organization dispels any notion of complicated requirements for membership: "The only requirement for A.A. membership is an honest desire to stop drinking." The pamphlet also prints passages entitled "Am I an Alcoholic" "The Doctor's Nightmare" "The European Drinker" "Women Suffer Too" "Bill's Story" "Medicine Religion and Alcoholics Anonymous" "The Twelve Steps" "Our Friends Say" and Dr. Harry Emerson Fosdick's review of the famous "Big Book" Alcoholics Anonymous which had been published just four years earlier. ref. 3735001New York The Alcoholic Foundation Inc. n.d. ca. 1947. 16mo 6 x 3½ inches. 10 pages. Self-titled wrappers as issued. Lightly-worn and lightly age-toned; in near fine condition. An ephemeral Alcoholics Anonymous rarity from 1947. The first A.A. group in Philadelphia was established in 1940. It was known as the Philadelphia Group and its early growth became one of the key examples of A.A.’s expansion into major urban centers outside New York and Akron. The Philadelphia area quickly became a significant hub for A.A. activity during the 1940s. The present 10-page booklet introduces the reader to the Philadelphia chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous explains what it means to be an alcoholic and offers self-assessment questions to help readers determine if they fit that description. It then profiles the then seven-year-old “Philadelphia Group” describes its club rooms outlines the elements of successful treatment and concludes with guidance for relatives friends doctors ministers and local social agencies. This ephemeral rarity appears unrecorded; we find no copies traced in American institutional holdings or library catalogs. unknown
ref. 3735002Pennsylvania n.p. ca. December 1947. Single sheet folded once to form a 5 x 3 inches leaflet. Small losses along edges and spine fold; some words affected; good. A rare survivor from the early postwar spread of Alcoholics Anonymous this 5 x 3 inch leaflet features a printed map reproduced from a hand-drawn original showing the greater Montgomery and Bucks County area and documenting the North Penn Group of A.A. in Lansdale Pennsylvania. Organized April 24 1947 and meeting at the Lansdale Youth Center the North Penn group’s leaflet marks key roads towns and electric rail lines to direct members to open and closed meetings. Its vernacular design reflects the grassroots nature of early A.A. activity listing meeting times for Lansdale North Wales Hatboro and Abington and noting that “Lansdale has a separate room for the D.M. ladies who meet same evenings.” The Twelve Steps are printed on the back followed by text of encouragement and a PO Box for the group is given for “Sincere Inquiries.” A rare ephemeral piece of local A.A. history unrecorded in institutional holdings or library catalogs in the United States or abroad. unknown
