1695ref. 140949515Paris: Laurent d'Houry 1695. First edition. Very Good. First edition two books in one volume. Bound in alternating eights and fours in duodecimo format. xii 219 119 pp. Bound in full contemporary calf laced in boards gilt tooling to spine all edges speckled red. Very Good with chipping to corners and head and tail of spine cracking and discoloration to leather; front joint cracked but holding. Light toning to contents dampstaining to endpapers and to margins of first 30 and last 100 or so pages not very noticeable. Inscriptions in various hands to endpapers catalogue clippings tipped to front pastedown and small chip to lower corner of pp. 1/2. Duveen p.528. A glossary of alchemical terms combined with a treatise on "the tripart preparation of gold and silver." The anonymously authored Dictionaire Hermetique is generally attributed to the prolific medical and metaphysical writer William Salmon 1644-1713. He was more of a compiler than a theorist and a list of authors on whose work he drew is included in the preliminary pages of this volume. The second book erroneously dated 1595 instead of 1695 on its separate title page comprises the first French translations of two treatises previously published in Latin. The first deals with the transmutation of base metals into gold and silver the second with the method of creating a Philosopher's Stone. The author is Gaston DuClo named here as "Gaston le Doux dit de Claves" due to a publisher's misunderstanding a French lawyer and chemist whose experiments impressed his contemporaries and who is named in Robert Boyle's 1661 Skeptical Chymist. Laurent d'Houry unknown
