ref. 81481Paris: 1927. Original silver-gelatin photographic print 7" x 6". Mounted on thin board 13" x 9-3/4" signed "A. Feny" on mount below image see note. Dated in the subject's hand "17/8/27 - Paris" and inscribed: "To the Beloved couple Grover & Nettie hoping you will continue having success and making friends" signed in full. Some abrasion to the mount especially at corners; small flaw to image at upper left corner still Very Good or better. A lovely jazz-age portrait of Henry Georges Walter playing his trumpet probably in a Paris nightclub around 1927. Walter b.1902 was born in Alabama and studied music in the renowned Harlem studio of Isabel Talafierro-Spiller but seems to have spent most of his performing career in Europe. A brief notice in the Baltimore Afro-American for Oct. 19 1929 advises that Walter "will return to America in October. after being eleven years in Europe;" he was at this time performing with Opal Cooper's "International Five" a popular Paris quintet which also included Samuel Richardson Harvey White and Charlie Lewis. Little else is known of Walter; the 1930 U.S. Census finds him living as a lodger on 151st Street in Harlem with the occupation of "musician" but we find no further record of him after this. The photograph is titled "A Fény" with an address in Hungarian at left: "Váczi U Vaci Utca 11/B." The title which translates to "The Light" is possibly a reference to the influential Hungarian photographic journal of the same name published in Budapest from 1906-1912. We have been unable to satisfactorily identify the photographer. unknown books

ref. 140946234UK: Unknown 1980. Near Fine. Two vintage anarcho-punk/ peace punk armbands from the United Kingdom manufactured circa 1980. Machine sewn white cotton linen with black elastic bands at verso. Screen printed red anarchist designs. Each are 6.5 x 3.5". Near Fine with light fading and minor abrasions at edges. Scarce in-your-face political ephemera from Britain's angry young and poor. Manufactured roughly one year after Margaret Thatcher's 1979 election -- a vote that solidified the anarchist and punk legions in opposition. The "Anarchy in '80" armband shows up around the leg of a guitarist in a photo of an obscure UK punk group The Condemned on the blog Leaders of Men taken in 1979 or 1980. The blogger refers to it as "proto crust" which seems accurate; it likely emanated from the cluster of punks around Crass and Subhumans that would become canonical "crust punk" bands. ref. PHA01Vintage photograph album approximately 13 by 10 inches 1 1/2 inches thick blue heavy card cover with embossed map of Alaska. Sampling of photos are shown here. There are a couple of newspaper clips which help to date and identify. This album belonged to a woman who grew up in Massachusetts attended Framingham State then predominately a teacher's college graduated and moved to Petersburg Alaska to establish a home economics department at their high school where she also taught art. The photos include some airport scenes and airplane views of her arrival what was probably the home in which she lived typical photos of friends/family a good number of harbor views fishery related views downtown - post office stores Hotel Arctic - some views which appear to be taken at work school a lot of ocean tankers/fishing vessels etc. A handwritten note seems to describe some of the photos in the album and indicates that she spent 22 years in Alaska and was there definitively in 1951. There is a photo processor envelope with a 1956 date. I'd date the date at late 1940s through the 1950s. The album has some of the phots glued down some mounted with photo corners and some attached with bits of tape. There are a few photos that are damaged scraped from maybe have become stuck together at some point. Total photos: 358 along with a few postcards a couple of photo negatives and some miscellaneous items.

1787ref. 92325Beaune: s. n. 1787. Fine. Rare 18th-century Register of the Burgundy Wine Trade s. n. Beaune 1787 17.8 x 22.1 cm Relié Ledger of wine sales for shipment kept by a Beaune wine-trading house 63 leaves 124 pp. written in ink followed by 26 blank leaves. The entries span the years 1787-1795 followed by a few pages dated 1809 containing draft letters often sent from Koblenz relating to delivery probably drafted by intermediaries. A rare order book from a wine-trading house probably the Patriarche constituting one of the earliest surviving records of their trading activity. This unpublished first-hand source fills gaps in our knowledge of the house's early years shedding light on export routes and the prices charged for the various appellations and vintages. Limp vellum with ties the covers made from a reused skin bearing text in ink the lower cover split in several places with tears affecting the spine in two places. The register covers the years 1787-1795 for a trading house that benefited from an edict issued in 1776 under Turgot's influence which fully liberalized the free circulation and trade of wine throughout the kingdom Jean-Marc Bonnefoy Le monde de la vigne dans la région de Nolay de la fin du XVIIIe siècle à 1914 p. 95. Entries are recorded from September 1787 onward only a few months after Thomas Jefferson's visit to the region during which he delighted in the wines of Meursault Pommard and Volnay as recorded in his travel notes Notes of a Tour into the Southern Parts of France. The eighteenth century saw the founding of some fifteen trading houses among them Patriarche established in 1780. Several elements point to this firm in particular: a bibliographer's note on the paste-down together with an 1809 letter accompanying the register addressed to Patriarche et Misserey by a delinquent debtor pleading for an extension to settle his account. Between 1808 and 1811 the merchants' directory indeed lists Patriarche et Misserey as partners under Beaune. Several grades appear first second and third quality as well as old wine along with the true appellations of origin a practice that became widespread from the 1730s onward: Meursault Beaune Volnay Pommard Chassagne namely. The earliest vintage recorded dates from 1784. The clientele consisted mainly of wine professionals merchants dealers and innkeepers with the remainder drawn from the social elite: holders of offices and official posts wealthy private individuals or clergymen pooling their orders. Trade extended across northern and eastern France occasionally Normandy as well as Paris Vienna Turin Brussels and Switzerland Basel Bern and Neuchâtel. Most orders are recorded in feuillettes bottles or pièces more rarely in quarteaux while prices are generally given according to the quantity of a queue around 500 bottles. Business was brought in through various intermediaries among them Canon Fromageot of Beaune whose reputation was praised throughout Europe by Count von Rosenberg a frequent presence in the register's entries for his numerous wine orders to be sent to Austria: Count Rosenberg tells me that his correspondent for Burgundy wine is Abbé Fromageot canon of Beaune that a pièce costs him 240 livres tournois and that I need only have it brought down the Rhône for him. Europäische Aufklärung Zwischen Wien und Triest. Die Tagebücher des Gouverneurs Karl Graf Zinzendorf 1776-1782. Certain bottles were sometimes to be marked with monograms noted in the margins. Most orders are specific at times cryptic neither old nor new; with body; no vintage specified only the time at which it should be bottled - a full-bodied wine from Beaune or Pommard sic is wanted and include vintages colour or even rather amusing remarks: not good do not ship !. An exceedingly rare wine-trade archival document from the turbulent times of the Revolution and the Directory offering new data on major houses whose s. n. hardcover
