The official trade unions not only continued to exist but gained power in the late Soviet and post-Soviet period. Sue Davis explains the reasons why the official trade unions survive and thrive and new independent unions remain small and weak despite massive Western assistance. She examines many factors ranging from state policy to labour power in the late Soviet period as well as the first five years of the post-Soviet era in Russia and Ukraine. -- Contents: Glossary; Theoretical Framework; Institutional Change and Institutional Formation: the Case of Trade Unions a Model of Trade Union Leaders' Decisions to Choose "voice" or "exit"; Soviet Legacy and State-society Relations: the Case of Trade Unions; Institutional Change Under Gorbachev: Coal Miners' and Railroad Workers' Unions; State-society Relations in Post-Soviet Systems: Trade Unions in Russia Incentives and Constraints in New Union Formation; State-society Relations in Post-Soviet Systems: Trade Unions in Ukraine; Conclusion; Notes; Bibliography; Index Palgrave Macmillan hardcover

1962ref. 605910Sydney: Robert Burton 1962. Unbound. Near Fine. Original Australian daybill movie poster for Stanely Kubrick's film adaptation of Lolita. Measuring approximately 13 ½" x 30". Creased twice from being folded for mailing as issued and some bumping to the corners with some very light toning to the margins still near fine with the illustration clean and bright. Features an illustration of Sue Lyon as Dolores "Lolita" Haze peering over her now iconic heart-shaped sunglasses. The poster states "The book is banned! How did they ever make a movie of Lolita" and at the bottom "Not suitable for children." A disclaimer that unintentionally though rather ironically highlights the misguided production of the film which Nabokov himself was ultimately unhappy with and which had traumatizing real-life consequences for the underage star of the film Sue Lyon who in an awful instance of life imitating art became entangled in a "relationship" with the film's producer a then 32 year-old James Harris. The bright and bold almost pop-art style of the illustration combined with its ironic subtext and unique format makes this an exceptionally novel piece. Robert Burton unknown
