1632réf. 19044London: by Thomas Cotes for Robert Allot 1632. From the famed Second Folio of Shakespeare. Folio quarter brown calf and marbled boards gilt lettered and ruled on the spine. 251-302. A very handsome and large copy the binding in excellent order the text in nice condition and with only typical or occasional mild spotting or light aging the last two leaves of Hamlet supplied from a different folio then the rest. RARE AND HIGHLY IMPORTANT. Two of Shakespeare's most famous plays extracted from the Second Folio edition of his COMEDIES HISTORIES AND TRAGEDIES a cornerstone--and some would say foundation--of English literature. While the complete Second Folio is one of the book collector's great prizes a status well reflected in its price these days this is an opportunity to acquire two of the best plays from the volume bound separately. THE ESSENCE OF SHAKESPEARE and truly the earliest obtainable printings of HAMLET or MACBETH that one could purchase. This 2nd Folio printing of MACBETH is the second time only that this great play was printed. MACBETH is a tragedy so great that for centuries it has been considered bad luck to even speak its name inside a theatre thus it is almost universally referred to by stage actors simply as “the Scottish play”. HAMLET contains the great line “to be or not to be” considered the most often quoted of all of the Bard’s many many well quoted lines. In either case these are the earliest obtainable printings of Shakespeare’s greatest plays. [by Thomas Cotes for Robert Allot] hardcover

1734réf. 33903London: J. Tonson 1734. A pleasing and early octavo printing. Engraved frontispiece engraved head-piece and a six-line engraved initial at the beginning of the text Small 8vo bound in later blue wrappers hand calligraphed on the cover in brown ink. 96pp. A fine and well preserved copy the blue wrappers as pristine. VERY SCARCE. From the important Theobold oeuvre. Although Theobold ultimately gave way to Johnson in popularity he remains one of the pre-eminent Shakespearean editors. Churton Collins writing in the DNB claimed it “would not be too much to say that the text of Shakespeare owes more to Theobold than to any other editor.” The collection also draws on two rival editions J. Tonson’s and R. Walker’s. Although the two are nearly identical Tonson issued an advertisement warning the public against “such Useless Pirated and Maim’d Editions as are publish’d by the said R. Walker.” Henry VI Part III contains famous quotations among which are: How sweet a thing it is to wear a crown Within whose circuit is Elysium And all that poets feign of bliss and joy. Richard Act 1 Scene 2 O tiger's heart wrapt in a woman's hide! York Act 1 Scene 4 My crown is in my heart not on my head. King Henry Act 3 Scene 1 Yet hasty marriage seldom proveth well. Gloucester Act 4 Scene 1 For trust not him that hath once broken faith. Lady Grey Act 4 Scene 4 Fearless minds climb soonest unto crowns. Gloucester Act 4 Scene 7 And live we how we can yet die we must. Warwick Act 5 Scene 2 Suspicion always haunts the guilty mind. Gloucester Act 5 Scene 6 J. Tonson unknown

A beautiful production and as finely produced a twentieth century Shakespeare SONNETS as one might wish to find. The fine handmade papers used for this production are of great quality and show no effects of aging whatsoever. The design type and paper selection is very pleasing to the senses. A scarce item and one of a very few printed and bound especially for Riviere and Son. Robert RiviÄre founded his bindery in Bath in 1829 and George Bayntun followed his example in 1894. In 1939 Bayntun bought RiviÄre and merged the two firms. Bayntun-RiviÄre is now the last of the great Victorian trade binderies still in family ownership and prides itself on continuing to bind entirely by hand. The Chiswick Press was founded by Charles Whittingham I 1867-1840. The management of the Press was taken oer in 1840 by the founder's nephew Charles Whittingham II 1795-1876. The name was first used in 1811 and the Press continued to operate until 1962. The Press had becme very influential in English printing and typography under Charles Whittingham II who most notably published some of the early designs of William Morris. The Chiswick Press deserves conspicuous credit for the reintroduction of quality printing into the trade in England when in 1844 it produced The Diary of Lady Willoughby set in the reign of Charles I.
