Sold as a set. fine With the help of his father Rudyard Kipling's only son John enlisted underage with the Irish guards in 1914 and was killed in 1915 at the Loos. Kipling who is thought to have blamed himself heavily for the death of his son took it upon himself to write a regimental history of the Irish Guards in the Great War as a "monument to his son's service". He lends the full powers of his decadent prose in this rich description of the battlefields and the fighting men who lived and died there. 1996 Sarpedon hardcover

rif. 15605Printed by The Medici Society Ltd. London. Introductory note by Parish dated 'Christmas 1945 Bateman's Burwash Sussex.'. 8pp. landscape 12mo. Saddle-stitched into light-brown printed wraps. In good condition lightly-aged. A tasteful production with two full-page illustrations by 'T. O'B. Horsford' captioned 'Bateman's' and 'The Hall'. Introductory note by Parish inside the front cover: 'The following article was written for the Kipling Society's Journal and is here printed by courtesy of its Editor.' The piece begins: 'It was not long after our arrival in 1940 as the tenants of Bateman's that we learnt that Mr. Kipling had a sister and we wondered what manner of lady she might be little expecting ever to meet her. Judge then of our pleasure when last July five years later a letter arrived from Mr. Brooking founder of our Society saying that Mrs. Fleming whose home was in Edinburgh was on a visit to London and had expressed the wish to see Bateman's again and that he would escort her. The date was fixed for July 10th and at midday I met them at Etchingham station. Now how better can I describe this most charming little lady than by saying that she was exactly what you would wish a sister of Mr. Kipling to be.' A letter from Mrs Fleming to Parish dated from 6 West Coats Edinburgh on 17 September 1945 is printed over one and a half pages. Surprisingly scarce: no copy in the British Library or on OCLC WorldCat and the only copy traced on COPAC in the National Trust collections. Newspaper cutting of letter from Evelyn C. Johnson of Elloughton regarding 'Burne-Jones's St. Cecilia window' loosely inserted. Printed by The Medici Society Ltd., London. It is now a hundred years since the first publication of 'The Jungle Book' by Macmillan and Co.This magical mixture of adventurefable and allegory is perhaps the best-known collection of animal stories ever written. But they are more than simple tales. The jungle in which Mowgli lives is populated with creatures in whom animal and human characteristics are brilliantly contrived. In this very real often dangerousworld Mowgli grows uplearning the Law of the jungle from his animal guardians - Akela the wolfBaloo the fatherly bearBagheera the wise panther and Kaa the tough clever python.Even their enemythe brutalbullying tiger Shere Khanhas something to teach him. In 'The Jungle Book'Kipling skilfully tempers morality with excitementas in the story of the never-say-die mongoose Rikki-Tikki-Tavi and his life-and-death struggle with the cobra; and the mystery of animal society is hauntingly conveyed in the tale of Toomaithe boy who saw the elephant dance. The superb water-colours of Maurice and Edward Detmold which Macmillan commissioned in 1901 and published as a portfolio of prints in 1903are used to illustrate this new edn. The Detmold twinsworked as Maurice and Julius Detmold 1883-1908 and 1883-1957.Born in Putney 21st November 1883being christened Charles Frederick and Edward Barton Detmold. The two middle names were soon dropped and replaced by 'Maurice' and 'Julius' respectively. The younger twinEdward took his first names not from his fatherbut from the enigmatic Dr Edward Barton Shuldham described as occupier of the house in Upper Richmond Road where the twins were born and were privately educated. They studied animal life in the Zoological Gardens and worked in close associationpaintingdrawing and etching bird and animal subjects. They collaborated on several books before Charles Maurice ended his life by inhaling chloroform in 1908.The brothers were in April 1908about to leave for a holiday in Sussex with Dr Shuldhamwho had asked Maurice to put down the household cats with chloroform. Not an unusual practice at that time: as the cats would be replaced on the return from the holiday. Edward Julius went on to become one of the most interesting of the gift book illustratorsspecialising in animals and plants which were drawn with exactitude and sympathy and often placed in fantastic architectural or landscape settings. In its delicacy of outline and subtle colour harmonieshis work shows the influence of of oriental miniature painting. In the early 1920's he retired to Montgomeryshirewith his widowed sistercontinuing to drawpainthold exhibitions of etchings and drypointsbut it wasn't long before he retired completely from public lifeand eventually committed suicide himselfon 1st July 1957.Both brothers were elected ARE 1905but resigned a few months later.
