1909Best.-Nr. 90334New York: Doubleday Page & Company 1909. First American Edition. Octavo. 19.5cm. Publisher's deep blue cloth lavishly decorated in gilt and silver to spine and front board. 77pp. printed rectos only; 16pp. fictional advertisments to rear. Bright and straight with some light scuffing to spine ends and extremities a little darkened to the spine; internally clean and fresh color pictorial endpapers by Leyendecker color frontispiece with tissue guard color plates. A very good copy of a pretty book. A most unusual bit of Kipling in the shape of a fantastic vision of the future in which the majority of air travel is via dirigible public industrial or private and which takes the form of a journalistic account of the aerial mail service for some future magazine or other a little optimistic of Kipling to assume we would have journalism in the 21st century. This heady and dramatic vision of the year 2000 is embellished with a selection of advertisments and blurbs for private airships dirigible engineering equipment and classified ads looking for pilots "Must be a member of the Church of England." in a pseudo-documentary transmedial fashion. The end result is an entertaining and deeply unserious bit of speculative fiction. Doubleday, Page & Company unknown
1897Best.-Nr. 153245London: Macmillan and Co. 1897. First edition of Kipling’s classic tale of the Grand Banks cod fishery a coming-of-age story long regarded as one of the great novels of the nineteenth century. Octavo original blue cloth elegantly stamped and lettered in gilt all edges gilt with a frontispiece and 21 illustrations. In very good condition with rubbing inscription to the half-title page. Illustrated by I.W. Taber. Like his two Jungle Books Kipling wrote this morality tale of life aboard a New England fishing boat while living near Brattleboro Vermont his wife’s hometown. The book thus contains “something of his feelings about America—both his affection and his irritation” Carpenter & Prichard 296. “This is the only book of Kipling’s which is set entirely in America. All the characters are American. Not only that but the heart of the book—its moral in a single sentence—is one of Kipling’s main beliefs of this period expressed in terms essentially American or perhaps more particularly New England. He put it later in verse: ‘And the Gods of the Copy-book Maxims said: ‘If you don’t work you will die!’ It is a saga of hard physical work in conflict with natural forces. It is a book which could hardly have been written by anyone who did not admire Huckleberry Finn; it is a book whose claim to survival rests mainly on detail and it is all American detail” Mason 119. Best.-Nr. 149559Rare pamphlet of Kipling's humorous and ironic poem. Duodecimo original wrappers frontispiece of Kipling pictorial initials six pages. In very good condition. Rare with none appearing at auction in the last 100 years. Rudyard Kipling’s poem “The Betrothed” 1886 first published in Departmental Ditties and Other Verses exemplifies his early mastery of wit irony and social observation. Written during his years in British India the poem humorously explores masculine indulgence and moral choice through the narrator’s mock-serious decision to favor cigars over marriage parodying Victorian ideals of romance and respectability. Beneath its comic tone “The Betrothed” reveals Kipling’s emerging interest in the conflicts between personal pleasure social convention and the disciplined self—a tension that would later define his broader literary treatment of duty and individualism. unknown

Quarto original wrappers six pages with two pages of facsimile stanzas cover portrait of Kipling by John Collier. Printed as a single folded sheet forming six printed pages in triptych format.
