1894Best.-Nr. 149681London: Macmillan 1894-95. First editions of both volumes of The Jungle Book. Octavo two volumes original blue cloth decorated and lettered in gilt all edges gilt engraved tissue-guarded frontispiece illustrated by J. L. Kipling W.H. Drake and P. Frenzeny. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Near ownership inscriptions. An exceptional example. The Jungle Book is a collection of fables which provide moral instruction by using animals anthropomorphically. Each story begins and ends with a verse and the original publications contain some illustrations created by Rudyard's father John Lockwood Kipling. The inspiration for the book is evident. Kipling was born in India and he spent his childhood there. Interestingly Kipling wrote these stories when he lived in Vermont. The Jungle Book is used to develop the morale of the junior element of the Scouting movement "The Cub Scouts". The name of the head wolf "Akela" has been traditionally given to each Cub Scout pack leader. At least fifteen movies were released based on Kipling's stories beginning with Elephant Boy in 1937. A live-action anticipated version of Jungle Book will be released in October of 2018 by Warner Brothers. Macmillan hardcover

In 1903 the United Kingdom consisted of four nations: England Ireland Scotland and Wales. It was soon suggested that Kipling's "five nations" were the "five free nations of Canada Australia New Zealand South Africa i.e. Cape Colony and 'the islands of the sea' i.e. the British Isles" - all dominated by Britons; and except in the last case by recent settlers. That suggestion was endorsed some one hundred years later. Methuen and Co unknown

First illustrated facsimile edition of Kipling's poem The Absent-Minded Beggar a souvenir specially printed by The Daily Mail. Quarto silk moire wrappers six pages tissue-guarded frontispiece with tissue-guards between the two pages of facsimile stanzas cover portrait of Kipling by John Collier. Originally printed as a single folded sheet forming six printed pages in triptych format. The souvenir marked the 100th performance of Sydney Grundy's The Degenerates at the Garrick Theatre on Friday 24th October 1899 when Lillie Langtry who was playing Mrs. Trevelyan in the production recited Kipling's poem The Absent-Minded Beggar from the stage after the final curtain. The proceeds of the sale of the poem benefited the wives and children of the reservists. In good condition. Interior illustration of "A Gentleman in Kharki" by R. Caton Woodville. Rudyard Kipling’s The Absent-Minded Beggar first published at the outbreak of the Second Boer War 1899–1902 is a notable example of patriotic literature mobilized for imperial causes. Written to rally support for British troops and their families the poem was quickly transformed into a piece of popular ephemera with the first illustrated edition marketed through The Daily Mail as part of a charitable appeal. The publication’s sales generated significant funds for the reservists’ families illustrating how literature journalism and philanthropy intersected within the culture of British imperialism.
