1829Best.-Nr. 31868London: John Murray 1829. 2 volumes. First English edition. 8vo in the very rarely seen original printer's tan paper over paper covered boards the spine panels with printed paper labels. xv 407; viii 421 2 ads pp. A pristine and unused set internally very fine and fresh and very clean the bindings sturdy and attractive with only a bit of expected age or evidence of shelving. As fine a set as one can hope to find. FIRST EDITION THE ENGLISH ISSUE which appeared only a few weeks after the American. In spite of the near simultaneous release the text of this English edition does differ a bit from its American counterpart. Despite Irving's use of an imaginary chronicler Agapida who’s dialog livens up the flavor of the text the CONQUEST OF GRANADA was the product of careful historical research in Madrid. Irving was serving as a titular diplomat a post which gave him access to considerable resources as well as access to the most important inner social circles. It remains an excellent history on the expulsion of the Moors from Spain. This work along with his THE ALHAMBRA highlights both Irving’s scholarly abilities and his eloquent writing style. Hunt’s party was the first to navigate the Snake River the first to cross the Tetons and Oregon Blue Mountains and the first to come through the Union Pass. Carey, Lea, & Blanchard hardcover

Octavo early 20th-century half red morocco gilt elaborately gilt-decorated spine raised bands marbled endpapers top edge gilt. $1500.First English edition of Washington IrvingÕs first major production.Published under the name of Diedrich Knickerbocker one of Irving's many pseudonyms A History of New York is ""a monument of mock-eruditionÉ perhaps his greatest book"" ANB. Irving began this literary parody in response to Mitchill's Picture of New York 1807 ""but instead found himself writing a comic history of old New York in a compound of sense and nonsense which still brings chuckles of laughter reminiscent of nothing so much as Don QuixoteÉ this is the first completely original American non-scholarly book"" Grolier American 100. The success of ""Knickerbocker"" won Irving literary fame in America and Europe. ""Though this was one of the first-fruits of his inventive talent it is risking but little to affirm that in its peculiar qualities it has not been surpassed by any later effortsÉ of its accomplished author"" Allibone I:935. Sabin notes that ""Indeed it will not be saying too much to assert that a large portion of the readers of the present day owe their knowledge of the history of New York to the interest created by this unrivaled performance."" First published in 1809; the title page of this first U.K. printing states it is ""a new edition."" Bound by Root & Son. BAL 10227. Howes I83. Sabin 35152. Grolier American 100 28. 1832Best.-Nr. 25081London: Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley 1832. 2 volumes. A very fine set richly bound. Internally near pristine and perfect the bindings extremely well preserved all solid and sturdy. THE TRUE FIRST EDITION AND A FINE SET IN VERY HANDSOME BINDINGS. RARE IN RED MOROCCO BINDINGS. While serving as a diplomatic attaché to Spain Irving had access to the fabulous library of Obadiah Rich and engaged in scholarly research. This detailed description of the Alhambra and account of the legends surrounding the famous monument was one of the fruits of this research. The flavor of Irving’s writing is scrumptious in a manner quite fitting to the Moorish landmark. Though an American Irving published under the Crayon pseudonym was quite the literary celebrity in Europe. He was lionized by both the English and French and for several years the intimate of such notable men of letters as Scott Byron and Moore. There are a number of his works in which the London issues not those printed in New York or Philadelphia are the true first editions. It may be that the more cultured societies of Europe at that time were quicker to recognize literary genius then the more provincial Americans of the period.
