Overall very good with some toning pins holes at the corners and light edge wear; one poster with a couple of water spots. Eight posters for performances at the Old Post Office Theatre on Newtown Lane in East Hampton New York which was co-owned by photographer Ken Robbins who used the upstairs as his first darkroom. The theatre specialized in avant-garde plays by the likes of Harold Pinter Terrance McNally Sam Shepard Eugene Ionesco Joe Orton Rochelle Owens Boris Vian Leonard Melfi and others. Drama apparently did not pay the bills so the theatre put the kibosh on live performance after just two seasons in favor of art house films. It was likely that few of these posters were made for each performances and even less have survived. unknown

1959ref. 61619Paris Galliard 1959. 8vo. Uncut in the original wrappers. Minor wear with edges exhibiting slight signs of use. The cover is clean overall but has four small brown spots. Fine and tight. Internally exceptionally well-preserved clean and bright. First edition presentation-copy of one of Ionesco's most celebrated plays significant work in the Theatre of the Absurd. The copy is inscribed by Ionesco to front endpaper: "Pour Kjeld Abell - / Eugène Ionesco / avec sa reconnaissance / et son amitié. / E.I. / 9-25". With works like the present Eugène Ionesco helped found the important movement known as Theatre of the Absurd. The play explores themes of societal pressures conformity and the loss of individuality set in a town where the inhabitants gradually turn into rhinoceroses. Through the protagonist Berenger who resists the transformation Ionesco critiques totalitarianism the allure of mass movements and the fragile nature of human identity. Ionesco a Romanian-Frrench playwright bacame known for his rejection of traditional theatrical conventions and his focus on the absurdity of human existence. Alongside writers like Samuel Beckett he shaped post-war drama exploring existential themes through humor illogical dialogue and surreal situations. Le Rhinocéros is often interpreted as a commentary on the rise of fascism and the danger of unhecked ideologies though Ionesco insisted it was a more universal reflection on human nature. Its relevance endures as it invites readers and viewers to reflect on the role of the individual within the collective and the pressures to confirm even when that means losing one's humanity. The work is one of Ionesco's most celebrated plays alongside La Cantatrice chauve The Bald Soprano and La Leçon The Lesson and it soldified his reputation as a key figure in modernist literature. Kjeld Abell was a major Danish playwright and a key voice in mid-century European theatre. His bold innovative works anticipated many of the themes later explored by the Theatre of the Absurd. Abell often employed dream logic satire and non-linear structure to critique authoritarianism and explore existential dilemmas making him a highly relevant and meaningful dedicatee for this presentation copy. unknown

ref. 107744Paris: Gallimard 1975. INSCRIBED COPY WITH TWO TYPED LETTERS SIGNED First edition thus first impression. Out-of-series copy from an edition of 55 inscribed by the author "A H. Gene Blocker avec toute ma sympathie Eugène Ionesco" on the half-title. With two typed letters signed from Ionesco to Blocker who was professor of philosopher at Ohio University; the letters discuss the possibility of a lecture series in the United States. In the first letter dated 18 December 1975 Ionesco politely declines Blocker's invitation: "Unfortunately my command of English doesn't allow me to do a lecture in English. I just read some easy texts and I understand a little English language but I don't speak English at all. So I think that my visit to the States wouldn't be of any interest". The second letter dated 29 December reveals a volte-face. Ionesco having since received a letter dated 12 December and now writing in French thanks Block for his invitation which he is professedly keen to use in order to lecture on the Theatre of the Absurd and issues of intellectual freedom in Europe. He also encloses the present copy. This is the first edition of L'homme aux valises; A Hell of a Mess was the American title of Ce formidable bordel first published in 1973. Octavo. Original cream light card wrappers printed in red and black. Two laid-in foolscap typed letters 300 x 210 mm the first dated on copy paper the second on wove paper. Letters neatly creased where folded the first with a few discreet uses of corrective fluid the second very slightly nicked at upper left corner and negligibly marked with very faint spotting along inner edge recto and verso: very good condition overall. unknown
